To 'Stache or not to 'Stache

That is the question. Will you be participating in the Mustache Dache in Seattle on November 17th?

I will be not be 'staching it up as I will be out of town that weekend. If I was in town I would be gathering a band of misfits to join me in this 5K event.

As you know I have gone from taking my running seriously to have fun over the summer. A turn of events that has me enjoying my runs. I don the sparkle, I give out high fives and I offer encouragement alone the way.  This is my type of event  not only does it look like a good time but it raises money for men's health.

What is the Mustache Dache?  The Mustache Dache is a slightly irreverent mustache-themed 5K with a killer post-race party to raise awareness and funds for men’s health, with an emphasis on prostate cancer. Men, women, and children are all invited to participate in the race, grow a mustache (if able), and register at Movember to become Mo’ Bros and Mo’ Sistas.

Since I am unable to attend instead I am giving away a free entry. If you win all you have to do is figure out what type of Mustache you want to rock and get your friends and family to join in the fun. Will it be:

 Or any other variation....I honestly don't know if there are technical terms for mustaches, except then handle bar mustache.

Did you catch the lie

Last week I posted two truths and a lie. I had a great time reading the ones posted and making guess. I am terrible at spotting a lie.

My two truths and a lie were:

- For my bachlorette party we all dressed up in thrift store wedding dresses and went clubbing in Seattle. Truth - it was back in 2004 before the land of everyone having a digital camera so I have no photos to share. But mine was a lacy beauty that looked like a dress an 80 year old would wear if she was getting remarried.
- I am an only child - Lie - I have 2 step siblings, and 1 brother. I grew up the youngest and often felt like an only child since my closest sibling is 5 years older then me.
- I was interviewed by the BBC for a TV show for being on an experimental drug after surviving a car accident Truth - This happened back in 1997, they were doing some show on surviving terrible accidents. I never saw it but  I had a few people ask me about it after it aired.

This week starts week 8 of my training for the 3 day walk. I am half way through the training. 8 weeks until I am actually walking the course with other people. Here is what the plan calls for.


Before this past weekend, I didn't understand why they had Monday as a rest day. I now understand my body hated me yesterday. I was sore all day and hated have to move anywhere. I hope this weekends walks go better.  I am on track to have the highest mileage month ever walking or running.  I am at 87 miles for the month and have another 35 miles planned before the end of the month. For the longest time I tried to break 100 miles in a month walk/running, if it takes me just walking to do it then so be it. I will admit these doubles are getting tougher, I can't wait for my body to adjust to them.

6 hours 14 minutes 21 seconds


Is the amount of time I spent walking this weekend. Saturday I woke up and had planned to head to the Seattle Brain Cancer walk. However, my husband decided to go in my place since the birthday party he was talking my daughter to ended up being a pamper party for 5 year old girls. It was a wise choice for him to switch with me. This meant that my walk was going to be pushed out to later in the day. I did not set out for my 14 miles until 2PM. I had a rough plan in my head on where I was going. I wore my backpack again to carry water and supplies.


Before leaving my neighborhood, getting my iPod from my car so I would at least have tunes. My goal was to walk it under 4 hours. Which I made it with 2 minutes and 15 seconds to spare.  I fueled my walk with a bottle of Nuun and Honey Stinger Waffles. I am using Nuun and water through out my walks as that is what they will have on the course of the 3-day and I figure the less I have to carry the better. I know they will have snack stations along they way, but I plan to bring my own. I am trying to figure out what works best for me right now.
 
I hit mile 10 and wanted to be done. By mile 12 I was starting to really slow down. The backpack was really starting to bother my shoulders. I called my husband and asked him to pick me up at the bottom of our hill. I knew I didn't have it in me to talk back up the hill once I hit 14 miles. I watched my watch click over and instantly sat down where I was on the sidewalk and started to stretch. I planned it so I would end inside the park by my house, so I didn't look strange just sitting there.

Sunday I woke up pretty stiff. We wanted to go out on the boat since the weather was nice. We only stayed out a few hours, but enjoyed the sunshine while we have it. After a quick lunch I head out for a 10 miler around 3PM. This time I didn't take any iPod and carried my handheld and ShotBloks for fuel. My legs were tired, my hips wore sore and the walk was pretty uneventful. At mile 7 I called my husband and asked if he wanted to meet for dinner at 5 Guys, I was craving a burger.  
 
I ended up with 7.56 miles, 2.5 miles short of my 10 miles, but I was thankful to cut it short. My feet are sore from walking 21.56 miles over two days. Along with everyday stuff.
 
All the calories I burned off walking were consumed on one meal, with a small cheeseburger and sharing an order of fries with the family. I don't care though at the time it was just what I needed.

1. We have been having an amazing September weather wise and I don't want it to end. Rain, Rain please stay away.

2. This weekend my plan calls for a 14 miler on Saturday and 10 miles on Sunday. I am freaking out about the 14 miler as this will be a distance PR for me. Even if I am just walking I have never walked that far before.  I haven't figured out the logistics yet as I have the Seattle Brain Cancer walk that day also. I think my total miles will be a total of walking before the SBC walk + the SBC walk + miles after the walk. I wonder how many miles I can get in before the walk?

3. I saw this yesterday and started cracking up! I am not as obsessed with Pinterest as most, in fact I don't remember the last time I was on there.

Little pink lunchbox

I try to pack my lunch, if I don't I wind up in the cafe at my work which isn't bad. I usually get a sandwich, but they make these awesome BBQ potato chips that are free with your sandwich, and that is bad.

Monday night I packed my lunch and didn't think anything of it when I used my daughters lunch box. When I took my lunch out of the fridge at work on Tuesday I laughed out loud. The lunch box screamed super professional.


 
Not the best option, but I actually really like this lunch box because it holds everything I needed for lunch. My lunch and afternoon snacks were pretty bland today, but it got the job done. Chicken wrapped in a tortilla, carrots, fiber one brownie and a Greek Yogurt.


As I was typing up this post, my husband asked me if I had watched the Gangnam Style Video. I had not idea what he was talking about. He proceed to have me watch a Parody of the video, which was done as part of someones wedding video or something along those lines. And since there are already a million parodies on Youtube, I am going to assume I am the only one who has not watched this. For your viewing pleasure -

Yesterday, was a good day

 Monday was a good day. It is not often you can say that. My husband took the little one to the doctor and she got her pins and her cast removed. She has to be careful for the next couple of months, but we are cast free! She wanted to keep the cast and the pins - and they let us bring them home. 

A big thank you to anyone who made a purchase from my fundraisers! Thank you so much. I made a donation to two of my teammates page with the money ($200 total between several fundraisers) and will get it corporate matched.  This week marks 9 weeks to go until the big day. Here is what the schedule looks like.
 
I was going to stop fundraising, but I can't....not until the day of the event.  I am looking for people who are wiling to sponsor me for the remaining weeks of training. The below chart shows how many weeks I have left and the total number of miles assigned each week. All you have to do is pick a week and donate a quarter per mile, fifty cents per mile or maybe even a dollar per mile, its up to you. 20 miles

That is how far I walked this weekend. Not all at once, but over two days. My legs are a little sore but overall I think I will overcome.

Saturday my schedule said 12 miles. I knew I was going to have to get up early to get it done. I really didn't want to get up early as I wake up early every other day of the week. The alarm went off and I frowned at it then got my butt out of bed. I set everything up the night before just like I would for a race. No excuse to crawl back in bed. I went down stairs made a PB sandwich and was out the door. I ate my sandwich while I waited for my watch to find the satellites.

I wanted to do a trial run on my Sparkle Skirt to make sure it would hold up to my walking and that I would be warm enough in the early morning. It is already in the 50s here in the morning, so I wore my Nike DriFit coat and compression socks.  The skirt was awesome, I know I have professed my love for Sparkle Skirts and before, but seriously if you have had problems with the compression shorts riding up on other skirts you have to try Sparkle Skirts.

 
I tested out my backpack again. The longest I had used it in the past was  6 miles. This time, while it didn't bother me, it did get me thinking that it might be to big.  I am considering picking up a hydration belt and trying that out next weekend. I am just afraid I will hate it then what will I do with it? Do you think I could return it if I used it once and hated it? 
 
I didn't have any 'proper' fuel for this walk so I grabbed a few Jolly Ranchers, a nurtigrain bar and my kids Scooby Doo fruit snacks. I ate the Jolly Ranchers and the Nutrigran Bar -I think Jolly Ranchers are my new favorite food when working out.

 
I headed out on my journey, which included a stop to drop books off at the library and then make up my path to get the miles in. I hadn't mapped out a path, but had a general idea of where I wanted to go. At mile 7, I had a choice, turn and take 3 miles home and end at 10 miles. Or do an out and back to get some extra miles in. I decided to do an out and back which was up hill and half way, but down hill the next. My goal was to walk up hill one mile, but my legs were getting tired so I turned around after half a mile and head for home. I figured I would make it up on flatter ground. At 10.5 miles I was at the road that went to my house. I knew it was .5 from where I was to home and I was getting hungry. I headed home and called it day....even if it was only 9:30am.
 
Sunday I woke up early and was really stiff from the Saturday. I decided it would be best if I waited a while before I walked to loosen up. Instead of walking I got a little crazy and started cleaning my house. Which included deep cleaning my child's bedroom, not sure that was the relaxation I needed but around 2PM I got on the treadmill to knock out 9 miles. I wore capris, a long top and my Mizunos. The recommend bringing two pairs of shoes, so I have been switching my shoes up. Saturday I wore my Asics. I am not sure which I like more, I love both for different reasons. 

 
Since I was working out in the garage I turned the lights off to keep it cool and Netflix on the entire time. My current guilty pleasure is 'Life'.  


The last 30 minutes of this walk was brutal, I was under fueled and getting tired. I was glad when it was over. Back to back walks like this are no joke. I think my body handled it ok, but it really gave me an insight on figuring out the properly needs for this event.

Week 10 is officially done. I am happy that I completed all of my walks - missing only 1 mile and look forward to what Week 9 has to bring.

TripleT - 3 Day Walk Addition

My brain is on full 3-day walk planning. I am 10 weeks out  and my checklist is out of control, it might help if I actually write it down. The 3 big things on my list this week are:

1. What to wear? Its San Diego in November - the weather could be warm or cool- yea that is helpful. I guess the best I have is it will be warmer then Washington, right. My plan so far is this:

2. In all my craziness that I call life this week I forgot to  post my training schedule this week. I actually did 5 miles on Tuesday as I was watching Netflix and wanted to finish my show. Wednesday I did a Spin workout followed by arm work. Saturday is my first LONG walk in a while - 12 miles! I am not looking forward to how long this will take me.   I am sure I will have plenty to blog about on Monday.  If anyone local wants to go for a walk with me let me know.  You don't have to do the whole distance just keep me company for a few miles. Warning I am thinking about starting out early tough.

Fall Races in the Pacific Northwest

I am really sad that fall is just around the corner. I love summer, but if you have read my blog for any amount of time you already know that. I am all about having fun the rest of the year with races. I am not worried about my time as I am doing so much walking training. Instead the past two races have been with other people and encouraging them along the way. This is something I have really enjoyed and plan to continue.  I wanted to share some races that I think are must for the fall:

Lederhosen, Beer & Running - Fremont Oktoberfest 5K  - September 23rd -  I am not attending as I busy that day, but their is a discount code on Zozi for a team of 4 for $50! You know I love a good discount race, so of course this made my list.

Issaquah Run -  September 30th - They offer a 5K and a 10K. This year will be my 5th year participating in this event. They event is being held a week earlier this year instead of during the usual Salmon Days festivities. I have no excuse to not do this event as the start line is less then a mile from my house.  I have 11 miles on my walk plan for that day so I will need to do some warm up miles before the 5K.

Snohomish River Run - October 27th - This is a new race. They offer a 10K and a half marathon. I thought I might run this, but I am no shape to be running over 3 miles. I could walk it as I have 10 miles on my training plan for that day....hmmmm so much to think about. I wonder if one of my teammates would want to walk this. Is there a course time limit? I know I could do it under 4 hours...off to check the website.

Run Scared 5K - October 28th -  I have not registered for this one yet, but it is on my radar to do. Providing I have someone to run with. Plus I have not done a costume run yet. Sure some people might say running in Sparkle Skirts is a costume, but I mean full on costume. Any one local doing this event?

Movember Mustache Dache - November 17th - I mentioned this one the other day. If I was in town this weekend - it would be a must my list. Just for the fun factor.

Seattle Marathon and Half Marathon - November 25th - I raced this last year and got my current PR. I was injured but I was well trained so I was able to get under  3 hours which is HUGE for me. I am registered this year thanks to a discount promo, but it is one week after the 3 day walk so I have  feeling I will be walking it and not racing this year. Many people don't like this course, but I really enjoyed it.

IronGirl 5K

This year I ran the IronGirl 5K with Julie and her daughter. I had 5 miles on my 3-day walk training plan so I started my watch as soon as we got out of the car. The 3-day coaches have stressed that just being on your feet and walking will help you prepare for the event. I figured walk, run, walk was on the plan for today.

Saturday night Sean and I had a date night. We went out to Earls in Bellevue and then to a movie. Staying up late the night before a race, even a 5K is not the best choice. Before bed I laid out all my clothing so I wouldn't even have to think when I got up. I was out the door by 6:30am and wishing I was still in bed.

I picked them up and we head to GreenLake. We were slackers and didn't pick up our race packets until the day of, so I got some extra mileage in just running our stuff back to the cars.


They forgot to tell me they would be matching, but I will tell you it is easy to keep track of the two people you are running with if they are wearing the same thing. The IronGirl event is pretty crowded. Not because it is big, I am not sure of the total number of runners - but  because the course is pretty cramped. I really like 5Ks are GreenLake but you are guaranteed congestion.

We did a run/walk combo the entire race letting Alli set the pace. Our goal was to beat August 5K time and we did, mission accomplished.  This event is one of the better women's events I have been to. They have great medals, great post race food and great prizes for winners. There are women of all ages from 5 year olds to 95 year olds who come out to this event.

If you are in the Seattle area I deem this a must do event. This is my second year attending this event and I plan to be back next year.

One of my goals this year was to participate in 12 races. This makes number 11 in the books - and more are being added to the schedule as you read this.

An all important question about my walk do we camp? Or do we shuttle to a hotel at night? I want to camp for the experience. But honestly I hate camping, I hate waking up cold and I don't want to wait in a line for showers. A nice hot shower, a comfy bed and maybe even a hot tub at a hotel sounds wonderful to me. Happy Friday

I love short work weeks, especially since last week was so stressful! All I need to do is get through today and enjoy my weekend.

A quick recap of my workouts this week because I actually got them in.

Monday - Rest
Tuesday - 4.25 miles on the treadmill, watching Season 3 of White Collar on Netflix
Wednesday - 60 minutes on the Spin Bike
Thursday - 5 miles, on the treadmill, in the garage that was 73 degrees, watching Netflix

I feel like I have had a productive week so far. This weekend the back to backs are actually pretty light 6 miles Saturday and 5 on Sunday - I am hoping to take those outside. It is already starting to cool down in the morning here in Washington, so if I get out early enough I might even have on a long sleeve shirt.

I wanted to anounce one more fundraiser for my 3-day walk. Starting Sunday an online Party for Posh will open up. In other news I got an email yesterday about a 5K that is happening in Seattle the week I am San Deigo for the 3-day walk. I am a little sad I will be missing this event as it looks like a blast. If you are around on November 17th - you need to check out the Mustache Dache.

1. This weekend I am going to do the IronGirl 5K in Seattle. It was supposed to be a race I run with my kiddo, but I doubt she will want to lug a cast 3.1 miles. It was supposed to be a PR race, but I am not trained for that. For now it will be a get outside and have fun race.

2. Speaking of the kiddo, she got her new hard cast yesterday and I was the first to sign it.

 
 
 
3. I used to eat eggs everyday for breakfast. I have now moved on to oatmeal. Anyone have any good recipes for baked oatmeal it sounds so good, but I am hate taking a risk on food. Share a link if you have one.

Countdown: 11 Weeks


I finally feel like we are getting closer to the 3-Day Walk in San Diego.  I have been following the walking program on and off since 24 weeks out. Now that I am closer, I feel I need to hit all of my walks going forward.

The plan for this week:


Last night I got in 4.25 miles on the treadmill, for easy walking I set the speed at 3.5mph and just got it done. 

Each week I get an email letting me know the mileage I need to walk. Along with that email is usually some sort of training tip. This week the tip was about stretching - I thought I would share. I need to get better about stretching so this is  great reminder. 

Training Tip of the Week: StretchingStretching is the key to helping you maintain flexibility and avoid injury. You will be amazed by how much it helps your walking. To help increase your flexibility you might want to consider adding a yoga or Pilate's class into your training program.
Some guidelines for stretching are:
  • Warm up first (walk for 3 to 5 minutes).
  • Hold each stretch for 10 to 15 seconds.
  • Achieve the stretching position gently. Do not bounce.
  • Only stretch within your limits. If you feel any discomfort, stop.
  • Remember to breathe while stretching.
  • The most important stretch is after your exercise.
Here are some stretching tips to follow while on the event:
  • Stretch 5 minutes per hour.
  • Stretch in the morning before you hit the road.
  • Stretch at all the pit stops.
  • Stretch waiting for the port-a-potty.
  • Stretch at a red light.
  • Stretch at a green light.
  • Stretch when you come into camp.
  • Participate in organized stretching in camp each evening.
I did recently purchase travel stick that I plan to carry with me in my backpack during the walk.  I also plan to utilize compression socks along the way as well to help keep the soreness down. I have been considering getting some compression shorts, but I don't know if my legs would want to be crammed into them all day. Maybe for recover?

August Update


August was a slow month for me fitness wise and my body can feel it. I didn't set goals for August and it shows. I was unmotivated most of the month. I had one  Impromptu 5K and then spent 2 nights at the hospital with my kiddo.

Running goals for the year are being morphed into walking goals for the year. At the beginning of the year I didn't know I would be signing up for the 3-day walk. I feel like I am doing well on my goals. I should reach all of them except the PR in 10K or the Half distance. The rest of 2012 is dedicated to training for the 3-day walk, so no PR in my future.

We are already two days into September and I have walked 11.75 miles and spoiler alert my total mileage is 505.25 for the year, which means I will be able to smash my 2011 total. Besides that I don't have that many goals set for this month but to get back on track. I have lost my workout structure and that makes me feel a little bit lost. I have the Seattle Iron Girl next weekend that I am going to do as part a longer training plan.
