What I learned on Monday

Been MIA for a few days - I haven't got a workout in since....Sunday, I think. Whatever DM says. On to what I learned on Monday.
  • Even the slowest fall from a 18 inch bike to the ground can cause damage
  • Just because there are no scratches or road rash doesn't mean there isn't an injury
  • Going to Urgent Care on a at 8PM on Monday night, means a long wait
  • You feel like a complete failure as a parent when you learn they have broken a bone on your watch
  • Being transferred to another hospital does not mean you will not have to wait in the lobby
  • Being told your child has broken her elbow and needs surgery to set it makes you feel even worse
  • Being admitted to the hospital at 2AM sucks
  • Having your 5 year old tell you that 'the air tastes funny' will make you laugh at 2AM
  • Morphine makes your child say funny things
  • Being woken up at 4AM by an angry mother on the other side of the curtain is no fun
  • Being moved to  private room because of said angry mother is awesome
  • Being on the 'add on' list for surgery sucks
  • With holding food from your child because you are on the 'add on' list for surgery sucks even more when you hit the 24 hour mark (reached 26 hours before surgery and ended up being 34 hours without food, just an IV)
  • Kissing your child bye before the wheel them into surgery sucks
  • Getting paged 30 minutes later is awesome
  • Seeing the x-ray of your child's new hardware sad with  side of cool (not they are only temporary)
  • Sleeping a second night in the hospital - lame
  • Getting to go home before noon on Wednesday - awesome
  • Giving your child with a cast a bath - sucky
  • Having her spirts high after she is clean and finally relaxing at home - priceless

Things I learned over the weekend

Let's do this list style:
  • Walking from your office to your husbands office - while carry your laptop bag, my result in a chaffed part on your back.
  • Said, chaffed area will look normal but will hurt to touch like a sun burn.
  • Eating Sushi for dinner, may result in two piece of birthday cake later.
  • Having a root beer taste test can be cheesy and fun all at the same time
a few of the varieties we tasted
  • Planning on walking 8 miles Saturday morning, doesn't always work when celebrating a birthday Friday night
  • Planning on walking 8 miles after a day of boating, doesn't always work if you lay down on your bed at 6:30PM after taking a shower
  • My favorite breakfast place for Sunday morning brunch has been found out
  • Guess I should stop checking in when we go there
  • My favorite breakfast place changed there chorizo scramble, it is no longer my favorite item there, but still my favorite breakfast place
  • Planning on walking 6 miles after a 3-day walk clinic can happen. Especially if you get 1 mile in before hand
  • Catching up on your Big Brother (2 episodes behind) can happen thanks to a DVR
  • Blogging for Monday, doesn't happen if you are catching up on Big Brother Sunday night
  • Eating a white bread Peanut Butter Sandwich for lunch is what happens when you don't grocery shop all weekend
How was your weekend? Learn anything new?

My workout plan for this week looks something like this......well, this is the baseline. Hopefully I can add some workouts to it.

About time Friday showed up

I don't know why I don't make Thursday a rest day. I really hate working out on Thursday, but I knew I had to get it in last night.  This week I have hit every one of my workouts and that is something to be proud of. Yesterday, I decided to walk the distance from my office to my husbands office since we usually carpool. It was 1.5 miles and took me 30 minutes because of the stoplights. The walk itself was not terrible. But my shoe choice caused me to get two blisters. My slip on Pumas, while cute are not meant for distance walking.  Last night I got my 5 mile walk in on the treadmill and dreaded ever minute of it. I just hate working out on Thursdays. One of these days I will rework my schedule.  My back to back walks this weekend are 8 and  6 milers - I just hope the weather behaves so I can do them outside.

Today is my husbands birthday! Happy 35th Birthday,Sean! I had to go into work, so I got up early and tried to be quiet so the little one didn't wake up. I think she is more excited about his birthday then he is. I was in the shower, when in walks my 5 year old saying she wants to shower also. Alright, so much for a quiet shower alone. We get out, get dressed and she runs into our bedroom, mind you it is just 6:30AM to wake up my husband. She wants him to open her card she made him and present before he even gets out of bed. When I dropped her off at school today - she was already telling everyone its her Daddy's birthday.

Hope you have a great weekend. Good Luck to all the Hood to Coast runners!

Weather Wednesday

This was last Thursday - at 5:35PM - it was 101 at my house.

This is the forecast for this week! Nothing like a 30 degree mood swing by Mother Nature.
Got to love Washington, I love it, I love it - I really do. If I just keep telling myself that maybe one day I will learn to appreciate the weather....maybe.

The second rule of....

Welcome to Fight Club. The first rule of Fight Club is: you do not talk about Fight Club. The second rule of Fight Club is: you DO NOT talk about Fight Club! Third rule of Fight Club: someone yells "stop!", goes limp, taps out, the fight is over. Fourth rule: only two guys to a fight. Fifth rule: one fight at a time, fellas. Sixth rule: No shirts, no shoes. Seventh rule: fights will go on as long as they have to. And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.

I really think I need to watch this movie. As I said yesterday, I have been using this for everything. This morning I said, The second rule of weight loss, you don't talk about weight loss.

Then I laughed.

There are million and one studies out there that say talking about your weight loss is a good thing. I believe that for many people it is a good thing. I think for me its a bad thing. I put all this pressure on myself to do well and then when push comes to shove....I shove the food into my mouth.  I have joined weight loss boards, I have joined challenges, I have even ran challenges. At the end of the day when I lose the most weight is when I just shut up and do it.  Of course right now, am I breaking the rule in talking about it. No - I feel like I am defining my own rules:
  1. Shut up about how you are going to lose weight and just do it
  2. We don't talk about weight loss
  3. Talking about weight loss is allowed when you can say 'I lose XX number of pounds'
  4. You are not an animal don't reward a good workout with a bad meal
  5. One plan at a time - pick something and stick to it. Stop jumping around
  6. Shirt and Shoes required, no matter how hot out it is....unless you are in the garage then workout how you like
  7. Weight loss will go on until you reach your goal
  8.  You will always have the support of friends and family, don't be afraid to use it
There you have it! I talked about and now I am done. I am ready to tackle this and see what it brings me. Downloaded MFP app for my phone - check, have good foods in my house - check, have a game plan for the next few months - check. The only person standing in my way is me.

What are your thoughts on weight loss? Do you like to talk about it or keep silent and just get it done?

The first rule of....

The weekend was a bit rough on my legs. I did back to back walks again. The first walk was 5 miles + a 5K.  The second walk was 6 miles on the treadmill and the 6 miles were harder hands down then the 8 miles on Saturday.

While I was walking today I started thinking about the time commitment that this walk is going to take up.  This walk was 7 and 6 miles, but as we get close to the walk day the walks get longer. The longest weekend is 17 and 15 miles. I can't even think about how long that will take.  This week looks like this:

Last week I had to watch a safety video that talks about how to stay safe on the walk. What did I  learn from the video. The first rule of the fight club  - You don't talk about fight club. Ok so its not that extreme but there are things that will get you banned from the walk. Such thinks like running. No running is allowed and can get you pulled from the walk.  I understand they want you to walk for your own safety, but even a little jog now and then would help break up the day.

Every get odd sayings stuck in your head? I have been thinking the first rule of XXX, is you don't talk about XX about all sorts of things this weekend.

Impromptu 5K

Saturday I participated in the Snoqualmie Railroad Days 5K. Julie over at Free Julie invited me to join her and her daughter a few weeks ago. As I got closer to the race I really wasn't in the mood to run. I text Julie early and the week and told her I wasn't going. She encouraged me to come anyways. On Friday the day before the race - I sent her a message that I would go and tag along with them. I had miles to complete before the 5K so I told them that I would meet them there.

I told my husband that I was going to do the run, he started asking me questions...what time, where is it. I was like....hmmm I have no idea. He was shocked! I usually plan everything out to the last detail, even for a 5K.

I woke up Saturday morning at 6AM, got ready and headed out. The event didn't start until 9AM, but I had 7 miles on my training plan for the 3-day training plan so I wanted to get there early and get at least 3 miles in. I arrived in under 30 minutes and found a place to park and realized I forgot my Garmin.  I remembered that I had map my run on my so I got that out to track my distance. I had never been to this event so I sent out at a fast walk to explore the location. My first mile was a giant loop back to my car to take off my sweatshirt. Then I headed in the other direction to explore part of the course. Turn around and back to my car to grab a Gu. I hadn't eaten yet so I figured a Gu would work out perfect. One bite and I realized I am not a Gu person. I just couldn't handle the sweetness of it - and it was vanilla flavored. I drank some water that I had laced with Nuun and went on my way. At 3 I was by the registration table for the event so I stopped and got registered.

Swag - Shirt, bag frull of coupons - great for a small event
I walk back to my car and another mile loop, this time I stopped by a gas station got some more water and a granola bar. Looped back to the start line with a total of 5 miles logged on my feet and waited for Julie.

The plan for this even was to hang with Julie and her daughter along the way. Offer support to her daughter where I could and over all not kill my legs. We followed her lead in running and walking, her goal was to get in under 60 minutes and I told her that was easy. Just stick with us and you can do that. I tried to share my wisdom like pinching the cup when taking the drink of water so it deosn't spill all over you. :) I know I am helpful. The route was nice and flat and was a nice mix of shaded and sunny areas. I encouraged her to run through the sun and walk in the shade. Which we got a nice laugh out of because I could remember if that was the right plan. Julie's daughter goal was to run as soon as she saw the finish line. We rounded the corner with about .25 left and off we went to the finish! I am so glad I got to be part of her first 5K. She did awesome and I can't wait to see what is next for her. She said she is really good at swimming, so who knows maybe we have a Tri-athlete in the making.

Overall it was a great event. If you are looking for a fast 5K/10K then this event is for you. Beautiful course and a great set up overall. I was really impressed with how smoothly eveything went for such a small event.

How did you find me?

I decided to check out how people find my blog. I bust out laughing when I read the highlighted  search results below.

I then went searching for that same item to see what I would find. I found these bad boys at Socks By Socks Dreams which can be found at many sock locations.

I found these at teamestrogen

And then I started drooling all over my keyboard when I found this - Bacon and Egg Grilled Cheese

Does someone want to make this for me?

How do you find blogs? What is your favorite way someone has found you?

The Plan

Every week I recieve an email for the 3-day walk. This was Coutdown: Week 14 and looked like this:

That seems managable, I will work in some ChaLean Extreme DVDs and Spin on cross training days. My body seems to be handling the back to back walks. I enjoyed taking them outside this weekend even if it was warm.  Since I am talking about the 3-day walk I want to give one last plug for my fundraiser which close on August 14th. If you are interested in purchasing an item please visit my Thirthy One Bag Fundraising Page.  25% of the proceeds are being donated by the consultant. This is her entire commission. Every little bit helps.

In other news, I am already looking how to pack for 3 days of walk, 3 days of recover and sleeping in a tent. I think I am going to search some of you Ragner runners sites for ideas. Making sure I have all the essential recovery needs is my main concern. I have a feeling compression is going to be my friend.

If you have done a relay or a multi-day run/event share your packing tips. One item you couldn't live without and one item you packed and didn't need.

Back to Back

Last week was a bit rough for me workout wise. They were pretty non existent  most of the week. It was a week that was mentally and physically exhausting and I felt like any minute I was going to get sick. I was in bed most nights by 8:30PM and asleep before 9PM.  I finally started to feel normal on Friday and Saturday I decided it was time to get back on the workout track.

Saturday the little one and I went to our local farmers market. She goes for the rock guy (he sells polished rocks for .25) and the face painter. We usually by a little produce  and flowers. I wish we had farmers markets like other states where the produce is an amazing deal, but we don't.

Later in the afternoon we took our dogs on a small hike down to the lake. It is .43 miles down to the lake if you take the straight path. We decided to try a few other paths and clocked approximately 1.25 miles to the lake and back. That was enough distance to wear out my 4lb and 12lb dogs. The short walk made everyone hungry, we headed to lunch. I was eating lunch I told Sean to drop me off at a local trail as I wanted to see where it went. I knew I was about 3 miles from home, so after I explored the trail I would just walk home. The trail was short  and uphill, but it was paved and shaded. Most of the trail had these great rock walls as the short switch back went from the lake to the freeway. Once I reached the freeway I turned around and headed for home.

I had 24 ounces of ice water at the start of my walk, by mile 3 I was down to just under 8 ounces and the ice had melted.  While I had water and the right clothing on I was not prepared to be walking in the heat with very little shade for most of the walk. Bad planning on my part.  I was thankful when I made it home. Total mileage yesterday just over 6 miles.

This morning I woke up at 6:30AM, I argued with myself about getting out of bed. My training plan called for 5 miles and today it is supposed to be warm out. I finally got up and out the door by 6:50. I took my Nathan Handheld as I woke up feeling dehydrated. I love walking around my town early in the morning. Its peaceful and really the only people who are out are bikers and runners. I did a 5 mile loop and returned home a sweaty mess. Even though it was cooler out it was already stating to get humid. I am thankful I got my workout done early, now I can enjoy the day instead of worrying about when I am going to fit it in.

How has your weekend been treating you? Do you go to Farmers Markets?

500th Post

According to blogger this is my 500th post. For the past few days I have been trying to think of something snazzy to say or share or giveaway. Yet, I still have nothing.  Today, was my last free day before I start my new job in the morning. I went for a 4.6 mile walk and tried to enjoy my last free summer day.  During my walk I thought about this post and what I would write and the main theme I kept going back to was - Thank you!

Without my readers I don't know if I would have continued to blog and put myself out there. I love reading the feedback and comments. I have made some great friendships through blogging, I have done running wise, because of the awesome blogging community. Thank you for the inspirtation to keep going. Even as I prepare for my biggest journey yet, even though it is not a running journey I know I will have the support I need. THANK YOU!

Friday Mismash

After my admission of being a slacker on Tuesday, I have really tried to step it up a little bit and get back on track.

Tuesday - 3.8 mile walk followed by arm work and abs
Wednesday - 40 minute spin
Thursday - the day I need to make a rest day - 5 mile walk/run. Walked 2 miles/ran 2 miles/walked 1 mile.

Today I plan to rest as I just don't know if I can fit it in. We have a very busy day  - I know, we all have busy days. Since I am already awake my only choice is to stay up late and right now I am exhausted. I do have to go home from work to wait for the cable guy, maybe I can squeeze it in then. Time will only tell.

I am having a bit of a issue, I call this a good problem though. I have so much I want to do  - that I can't focus down on just one thing. I am really bad and training for multiple things at one time. I don't know how people train for Tri's I would get overwhelmed.  Here is my issue: I only like to run 3-4x a week, this would include walking long distance, as well. On other days I like to Spin, do weights and Hot Yoga, which I haven't done in forever.

I have the following events on my plate for the rest of summer and fall:
Because I haven't mentioned it enough my goal this year is to complete the 3-day walk without to much pain and suffering. That is my number 1 goal, everything else along the way is bonus.  The problem is the 3-day training plan has you walking 4 days a week. I know many people would just get there running in on the off days, but that overwhelms me and my body starts to breakdown.  Do I just back off on the races until the 3 day walk? Or do I go into the events I have signed up for knowing that I am just going to walk them? I have a love/hate relationship with running. I hate training for events, but love events. I guess if I walk/run the events I still get to enjoy the fun part. I have to get it out of my mind that my times are not going to matter.

My second issue - I really want to get back into Hot Yoga but the monthly membership is as much as my gym membership. Do I cancel my gym membership and switch to Hot Yoga? I only use the gym for Spin class and occasionally going to the pool with my daughter. I need to make my mind up before the 20th when my membership renews.

How do you nail down your focus when you have a bunch of events scheduled? Pick one to focus on training for and the rest are extra?

Three fundraising events going on right now

Kelp Noodles, say what?

A friend told me about Kelp Noodles months ago. I finally tried them over the 4th of July and thought they were tasty. The noodles took on the flavors of the sauce you cook them in.

I ordered them off Amazon last week and they arrived on Monday. I was really excited to try them but didn't get a chance until Wednesday night. I had on the menu Stir Fry, I would normally skip the rice and avoid the carbs. Of course I as I type this I am munching on Ritzs, oh well.

I cooked my veggies, created the sauce I wanted and a few minutes before the meat was ready I tossed in the noodles. In full disclosure I cooked the beef in a separate pan, as I knew my family wouldn't want to pick around the noodles. They are not very adventures at trying new foods.

One Package of Kelp Noodles
The package has 3 servings
Calories per serving 6
You read that right - the entire bag has 18 calories

Pardon my awesome foodie photography, awesome camera phone skills.
These noodles are easy peasy to use:
Open Package
Add to whatever you are making

I didn't measure a serving, but about 1/4 with some beef on top

The leftovers! I have at least 2 big servings left, possible even 3.

Since I try to eat low carb most of the time, I am beyond excited to try these noodles with different sauces. It gives you the noodle feel without the carb bloat. At first they are a bit crunch or more like an aldente pasta.  I would highly recommend these to someone who wants a noodle, but not the carbs.

In other important news I have worked out the past two days in a row, trying to get over my slacker ways of last week. Today is usually the day I want to through in the towel, I am going to get my miles in and get back in my grove.

Have you tried Kelp Noodles? Any suggestions for unconventional noodle replacements?

Note - if you buy from amazon they come in bluk. You get 6 packs in one order.
