"New to You" CT - Fail

Yesterday, I mentioned my back was hurting, it started feeling better as the day progressed and I figured it was as good time as any to fit in my "New to You" Cross Training Challenge for January. Nothing like waiting for the last minute right, since I have had this game since Christmas. I let the family know that as soon as I got home was going to Zumba.

Wait  - STOP - that is what I wanted to say, none of the happened. Well, my back did start to feel better.  What really happened is I got home from work and just wanted to hang out with the family, I wasn't in the mood to Zumba so I didn't. Then I got thinking. I really like the things I do right now. I enjoy my cross training and in fact I have a hard time fitting Yoga in they way I want to and I love riding my bike. Now is not the time for me to fall in love with another form of cross training. Last summer I did kickboxing and loved it, but at the end of the day it came in 3rd or 4th to other things I liked. This doesn't mean that if I don't see a good Groupon or Living Social deal I am not going to jump on it to try it out. It just means that in the first month I am putting the "New to You" Cross Training Challenge on the back burner. If something great does present itself of course I will share, but I don't see a monthly challenge coming from me.

For dinner I decided to try a new smoothie out, as a portion of my dinner.   

8oz fresh orange juice (I juiced all the oranges yesterday)
1 cup frozen mixed berries
1 scoop vanilla protein powder

The results were very tasty and went well with my breakfast themed dinner. :) After dinner and getting the little to bed I headed to the Garage to make up my missed Spin Class.  I watched old episodes of Private Practice since I stopped recording it a DVRing it a while back. I missed a lot of episodes, but I am actually surprised that this show is on the air. After riding for 45 minutes, I did a 15 minute ab workout and called it a night.

Its official that I am getting old. I may be approaching my 34th birthday this April, but I am already needing to use medicated patches on my back. I actually wish I would have tried these out years ago! They are wonderful. After my ride I had my husband apply one to my low back.....the area where we don't need to include a photo. No one needs to see my tramp stamp or my butt crack today while reading my blog. So anyway if you have any pain these are things do wonders. I buy the knock off Target brand. The work great and your hands don't get all smelly putting some cream on your sore muscles. Plus its easier to get the husband to put a patch on my bum, then to ask him to rub smelly cream on it.

Ughh Monday

Yesterday, we spent the day at the Seattle Boat Show.  We didn't come home with a boat, but we are still considering it and working out details. I wish I would have wore my Garmin to the boat show as it was a lot of walking, even more was the climbing in and out of the boats.

After the boat show I decided the only way I was going to kick this workout funk I was in was to fake it until I make it.  I hoped on the treadmill and struggled through 3.3 miles, but at the end I wished it wasn't 9PM and I had more time.  This inspired me to push through and get myself motivated for my next half. I have a little over a month to feel prepared for it. Is it strange now that I have completed the distance twice I am less worried about finishing and more worried about how I feel the next day. 
Do you believe the motto fake it until you make it?

This morning I was supposed to get up for Spin, but my back wasn't feeling it. I think yesterday's adventures put a little to much stress on it.  I am hoping by tonight it will feel better as I wanted to try my Zumba Wii game as well as hop on the bike for an hour.We shall see when I get home today how I feel and go from there.   This morning I did start my day with some semi fresh juice. The process of juice is a little time consuming I am not going to lie. It takes about  10-15 minutes prepping and juicing and 5 minutes to clean up. I am don't know about you but I don't have that kind of time in the morning. Last night before bed I made juice for this morning  - I don't remember now what I put in it but if I had to guess by the taste it was orange, apple, spinach, carrot and strawberry. Overall very good!  I also had some idea's last night for making a protein shake with fresh juice versus water or milk and now I can't wait to try them. I will make sure to share them if they are any good.

Rumor has it that Google is making changes to their accounts and that we are going to lose our ability to use Follow  with Google Friends soon. Fresh juice, so good

Since watching Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead last fall I have wanted a juicer. Well I wanted one before it but it really inspired me to want on. I kept putting it off and finally gave in and purchased a juicer on Friday. This morning after figuring out how it all worked and prepping some veggies I was ready to go.

My first juice was a random collection of stuff I had picked out. Spinach, strawberry, carrots, apple and cucumber - it turned out great to me.  My daughter was less then impressed.

She did however notice the pears I purchased and wanted me to make her some pear juice which she promptly refused to drink.  I just added it to my juice and drank it up - fresh juice is delish.

I am still trying to figure out the best combo, thankfully I am not that picky and so far all of my creations I have enjoyed.   I have already learned some tricks and hope that I can add veggies and fruits juice into my diet on a regular basis. I also thinking doing a 3 day juice fast might be in my future.  Of course I went to Costco to pick up some more supplies and not I feel like my kitchen looks like a farmers market.  Now to find out the best combo and best way to make juice in the least amount of time.

Lost that loving feeling

Last nights workout 5.3 miles.  I wasn't feeling it. I did a walking warm up and then increased the incline up every 1/4 of a mile up to 8% and ran at a very slow pace. I have a run in March that is 50% up hill so I need to really work on running up hill. I figure a little hill work here and there would help that out.  Lately I feel like I have lost my running mojo, I know we all have bad runs but I can't seem to get over this funk. I know better runs will come, hopefully the show up soon.

Before my run last night I had an appointment to get a facial at a local hair salon. The facial overall was ok, not sure if I will try it again. I think I like the hour of quite time better then the facial results - so maybe it is worth it to have 60 minutes of pure bliss.  While I was changing back into my shirt I noticed in the garbage can the leftovers from the mask. It was a hard mask and it looked it a little creepy staring back at me from the garbage can.  Of course blogger style I had to pull it out and snap a picture.

Overall yesterday for me was just a blah day. I hoping today picks up as we head into the weekend, but so far not so well. My stomach has been bothering me some more, to the point where breakfast consisted of bread. I skipped having coffee as I am afraid that it might just upset it more.  The plan right now bland food taking today as a rest day and hope for the best.

Triple T

1. Last night workout was a mishmash - I walked/run my 3 miles not thing to really write about. Afterwards I was still watching TV so I jumped on my bike for 15-20 minutes while my show finished. Once that was done I decided to toss in a 15 minute arm circuit - summer is coming and I love tank tops need to get this babies ready for the nicer weather.

2. The Biggest Loser is driving me bonkers with all the whiners. But then it hit me last night! This set of contestant are just like most of America.  Always wanting to lose weight but not willing to put the work into it. As we watch TV we want to scream and yell at them to get moving but in reality I can completely relate to them. I spent years going to the gym and putting in a half ass worked out wondering why I wasn't losing weight. I think this is the first season that the contests are really like the average person out there. They want something, but not bad enough to work for it.  What do you think? Do you know someone like these contestants?

3.  I have been having the worst Acid Reflux the past few days. It seems like whenever I eat something it comes out. Last night I had grilled chicken and cauliflower mash and I was burping it all night. So frustrating. Today I decided to just for lunch I would have a smoothie and a thing of fruit. Bolthouse, while not all Paleo but it is one of my favorite premade kind. What was interesting was this wasn't much food for lunch but I felt full.

In fact I know this will sound crazy but I get this strange pain in my left shoulder area when I overeat. I have always gotten this - it used to be my indicator that I ate to much.  Strange right?

Went a little crazy

Last night my plan called for 3 miles. I had planned to do a Biggest Loser inspired run. Run faster when they cry, match the people on TV, increase incline at commercial breaks and what not. But my body had a different plan.

They tell you to wait at least 12 hours before working out after giving blood. Monday I complete my workout in the AM so that wouldn't be an issue. I figured over 24 hours between giving blood and working out would be ok, but it wasn't. Around 2PM yesterday  I started to feel off and by 7PM I just felt down right awful, so I pushed the run to tonight and cleaned out my sock drawer instead.  I know what a wild a crazy night I had! Anyone else hate matching socks, I  don't bother and about once a year I will go through and clean it up.

 Yes that is the before photo! I was on such a sock high that I didn't bother to take an after photo...but I now have neat little stacks of socks.  I proceed to clean out my t-shirt and workout clothing drawers also, so now I have a nice pile of clothing to take to the donation station.  It won't stay neat and tidy forever, probably won't even last a week.

This morning I begged my body to get out of bed and head to spin class, I wasn't feeling it but since I was awake I got up and went.  The instructor was a no show! A few people said that more power outages happened last night in the area that he lived so we gave him the benefit of the doubt. Someone plugged in their iPod to the sounds system and we all rode for the duration of the class.  Tonight I need to get my make up miles, I know if you miss a run you just miss it. I just feel this time with such a short distance I just need to get it done.

I was a good cookie

Last week I mentioned that a cookie box reminded me to donate blood.  Then the Winter Blast of 2012 hit the Pacific Northwest, funny even during the middle of the storm I was receiving calls to come and donate blood. See I am O- and I if I don't go donate at my regularly schedule time I get calls to donate, more like polite harassment's.

Yesterday, after work I headed to the Puget Sound Blood Center and made my a donation. I have been taking my vitamins so my iron levels where good which are usually cause of me not being able to donate.  Look away if you are squeamish! :)  The photo was after the clean up, my vein was a bit crazy today that blood actually squirted out when the inserted the needle. That was a first for me.

The best part of donating blood! Apple juice and lemon Snickerdoodles....there of course are other options but that is what I usually pick.  

I had to resist laughing out loud when I saw this sticker on the side of a napkin holder.

This was the first time I gave blood since starting watching Vampire Diaries and when I felt the warm blood line on my arm I was kind of grossed out. Then I wondered if Vampires preferred there blood warm versus in the refrigerated  manner the drink it on the show. Then of course my silly mind started thinking about if Vampires could even be real.

Of course if vampires all had this sort of look, I might start believing. What can I say I am a sucker for the dark hair and blue eye combo.

I wanted to get up this morning and run before work, but it wasn't happening. I can't figure out why its so hard for me to run in the early morning. I really need to get over that. I have 3 miles on my plan for today I might need to make up a Biggest Loser Run to get it done with tonight. Last time I did that it made the run just fly by.

If you watch BL do you watch it live or DVR'd and at a later date? I usually let it queue up and then start watching it so I can skip through the stuff that annoys me.

Weekend Update

I have never been so glad to see a Monday. I am ready for my life to get back to normal. Yesterday, I got my mile's in for Team Gab's Virtual Run.  Made it to the store to restock my fridge and then attending a wedding reception for a friend.  Which made for a late evening.

This morning the usually Monday morning slump happened. I wanted to sleep in but it has been two weeks since Spin Class, first my back and then last weeks snow storm kept them gym closed most of the week.  I was ready to get back on track and to my regularly scheduled program.

The plan for the rest of the week looks like this:
Tuesday - 3 Miles and Arms
Wednesday  -  Spin and I want to try the new hot yoga class
Thursday - 5 Miles
Friday - 3 Miles
Saturday - Rest or Hot Yoga  or Zumba for the Wii.....I need to try that as part of the N2UXC Challenge
Sunday - 7-9 miles

2.11 - Valentine's Day Dash - Registered
5.13 - The Color Run - Forming a team now, registration is not open yet, want to join our team let me know.  (A big shout out to There She Runs I spotted this on her facebook and quickly reached out to others to form a team. The website says if you register on 2/1 and have  team of 4+ it is $25 per person. I will post that morning our team name in case anyone else wants to join and save)

Miles for Team Gab

I signed up to do a virtual race of my choice on 365 Days of Awesome for Team Gab. Then we were hit with the snow storm and I completely forgot about it. Friday when I was reading blogs I noticed it was the last day to enter and donate. I decided that I was going to sign up and do the half marathon virtual distance over two days.  Friday, I attempted to get half the distance in but the power went out.  Well, I could still get a 10K distance in....what I kept reminding myself were miles for Gab.

I wanted to give up after my 5K, I even took a photo of the treadmill. I reminded myself that there is no giving up when fighting  Pediatric Cancer so I needed to keep moving.  These miles were hard for me, I had to work for it. I kept reminding myself they are nothing compared to what a child with Cancer and their family has to go through. I completed the 10K distance for Team Gab. Fundraising for Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation will continue until they run at the PCRF Cinco de Mayo Half Marathon in May. It is not to late to donate, every little bit helps.

And then there was no snow

We came home Friday with plans to check on our pets and if the power was still out then head to a hotel. We were lucky enough to have the power back on. We cranked up the furnace and fireplace then did awe are thankful to have energy dance.
About 8PM my husband finally talked me into going and working out - I think I was driving him a little crazy. I will admit that I wasn't being the nicest person. :) I gathered up the energy when all I wanted to do was go to bed and headed to the treadmill. 10 minutes in everything went black and that was my queue to go to bed.

I woke up this morning still in funk but that power was back on. After a few outings to get some food staples and coffee the day started to get better. I have pretty much felt in a fog most of the day and I think that is from being over tired and just plan off my normal schedule. It doesn't feel like Saturday, I feel like I have lost a whole week of normal life. I am a bit of a control freak and this past snow week has taken its toll on me for sure.  Tonight, I went to get my run in finally and I wasn't able to get the show I wanted to watch to work on the TV, so I used that as an excuse to not run and hopped on the bike instead. I so need to get out of this funk and I can only hope that tomorrow will get better.

Either way for now I leave with a little bit of happiness as we have power!

Snow + No Power = Miserable

Yesterday, I mentioned how we were on day 4 of being all stuck at home. I forgot to mention that my daughter is not a fan of the snow, she doesn't like being cold. Shortly after I posted the blog it got worse. The power went out right before 8AM. Not only were we all home, but now we were home with out power and it started snowing again. We finally decided to head into my office to at least charge our laptops and get warm for a little while. Once we got a little work done and the little one burned off some energy we headed for home. My husband had an idea to try to pick up an generator for our hours. We checked the local Home Depot, then tried a pawn shop and lastly a Tractor store. Only the last location had them but the cheapest one was $1,300. You can bet I said no to that! I suggested a hotel more then once but he seemed to think we would do fine at home. We headed to Pizza Hut to eat some dinner before heading home.

I could have went with a salad but honestly I was miserable so I ate what the  family ate. Two bread sticks, 4 chicken wings and 1 piece of pepperoni pizza without cheese all with ranch. Oh and a lovely Pepsi. 

After dinner we got home and snuggled into bed to watch a movie with the little juice we had left on our iPad. Once that was over it was lights out, oh wait! 2 adults, a 4 year old and a 12lb dog all snuggled into a queen size bed makes for a bad night of sleep. We were not cold, but there was just always someone in my way.

This morning I woke up, hoping the power was on. It wasn't so Evie and I snuggled in front of our gas fireplace, which doesn't provide much heat when the electric blower is not working. Once my husband was up it was time to hit the showers.......oh my goodness getting out of a hot shower to a house that is 54 degree's is terrible. After getting dressed as quickly as I could we packed up the car to head to the next town over to get a quick breakfast (Egg McMuffin meal with an OJ) before heading into my husbands office.

As for the rest of the day, my gym is closed, the roads are icy and we have no power last time I checked. We have to clean out our fridge and freezer when we get home but for now I am trying to just take it one hour at time. That is all I have for now!

I am still here

I think I might be the most shocked! One year ago I started my blog in an effort to get me to my first half marathon. At the time it seemed like an impossible task. I figured I would write about in my awesome half assed writing skills in order to keep my accountable. Besides writing I signed up for a bunch of races to keep me motivated. Along the way I found many other AMAZING running bloggers, who helped to encourage me along the way.  I want to give a big shout out to all my followers, commenter's and readers! Thank you - without you I may have giving up after my first half.

As much as I wanted this post to be how awesome this past year as been we are in the middle of Winter Blast 2012, or whatever lame catch phrase news reporters are blasting. Depending on where you are in the state you may have had over 12 inches of snow fall at your house. I live about 25 minutes from the local pass and only had at most 4-5 inches. However I am impacted by all of the closures and have been working from home all week. I usually enjoy working from home, but this week its my husband, my 4 year old and me all in our small house 24/7. We have been doing well so far, but I am not sure about today as I just ran out of creamer for my coffee. 

Everyday is what you make of it.....I will make this a good day, just right now I am not sure how that is going to happen.  If you have any suggestions on how to turn this slow start of a day into a good day let me know.

One smart cookie

I love me a good cookie, but since going low carb morphed in to primal/paleao I have been avoiding to the best of my ability. I still buy them for the family. This week these ones stood out to because of the catchy reminder to Donate Blood.

Some might find it a bit odd to advertise donating blood on a cookie, but heck I think anyway we can remind people is good enough for me.  So Be a Good Cookie and Give Blood Today. :) Instead of cookies this week I have been eating Cutie Clementines/Mandarin.  We picked a bag up at Costco this week and they are half gone already. I think I ate 5 yesterday through out the day, thankfully 2 of them have about 80 calories.  I would rather eat these then one regular orange any day of the week.

On the workout front Monday I got caught up on some DVR'd shows while riding my bike for an hour.  Tuesday I hoped on the treadmill for a 3 mile run. My back survived but I am still being careful. I ran by feel and adjusted the treadmill as needed but tried not to focus on my speed.  Good news on the Hot Yoga classes, my gym has finally released the real days for Hot Yoga and the classes I can attend fit perfectly into my schedule. Now I just need the weather in to cooperate so they stop closing the gym early and I can try a class.

Alright spoiler alert if you watch the Biggest Loser. Just a few observations from last night:
  •  Who walks away from BL? And to use your family as an excuse? - ughhh
  •  Who names their kid Chism? Really Chism?
  •   I usually like Bob, but he is just bothering me this year. Maybe its just the editing but he just seems like an ass this year.
  • I feel like people are kind of half assing it this year? Maybe its because the contests are smaller then previous seasons.
  • It drives me bonkers that the sell diet pill ads during BL? Really do we need to see PGX advertisements.

I like my gummy vitamins

I was watching a friends video log of his current experience with cleansing and then going straight into a Paleo lifestyle and it reminded me I need to take my vitamins. Random I know but on his day 7 video he broke down the vitamins he was taking. 
I thought I would share with you the vitamins that I try to take on a regular basis. I do good for about a week and then forget for about am month.  I need to be better at taking my vitamins, but like everything else its a work in progress. I think I take more gummy vitamins then I do regular vitamins, so that is something right.  I am also not picky about the brand - so this is what I have now and when I run out it could change.

From Left to Right:
Fiber Tablets - Can't go wrong with a little extra fiber
Kids Chewables - These are for my daughter, but I also take them
Vitamin C - A must in our house as it seems someone always has the sniffles
Multi - A good overall vitamin
B12 - my new found love, I usually take one of these in the afternoon for an energy kick
Something else I have been adding to my smoothies for a little added energy is electrolytes. I am not sure yet if I like it. The taste is a little salty, and I think I feel a little energy boost from them when I use them in the morning, but overall I can't make an informed decision. I figure if it keeps me from the 5-hour energy and its not hurting me I might as while try it for a while and see if I like it.

Do you take vitamins regularly or are you like me and take them half the time? Any interesting products you are trying with the new year, every time I turn around I feel like some new 'health' product. I never know what to try. I will say a good recommendation goes a long way. So let me know what you like.

Oh and yes I have yellow duck tape in my cabinet. You don't? It was purchased for my daughters Halloween costume when she wanted to be a bumble bee. She ended up changing her idea. If you have kids in preschool you know everything needs to be marked if you want to see it again, so I used it to make her toys she takes to school now.

Weekend Update

This weekend was a pretty average weekend, workouts were completed at home mostly on my Spin bike, nothing spectacular to report.  The threat of snow was looming over us on Saturday so we figured we better head to Costco to put some gas in our SUV in case it actually hit.  We didn't see any snow on Saturday. Sunday we woke up to a few snow flurries, I decide to  make a big breakfast and try a new recipe. Fluffy Coconut Flour Pancakes was on the menu with some sausage and eggs. As a bad blogger I didn't take any pictures. They were good, they were fluffy as promised, but I actually though they were a bit too sweet. I think if had made a fruit puree as a topping the would have been awesome, maybe next time.  My big dreamy breakfast ended up as two small coconut flour pancakes and sausage - maybe next weeks will be better.

Since the snow decided to hold off I took our VW Golf into Seattle to meet some friends to see West Side Story. I only leave about 20 minutes outside of Seattle so it should have been a quick trip. When I was about 10 minutes out it started snowing and traffic stopped and we crept the rest of the way while the snow continued to fall. Roads were being shut down, along with freeway exists but after 40 minutes I was able to make it to the theater safely. I saw my fair share of cars sliding down the hills, as well as fender benders. In Seattle no matter what the weather people can't drive, but toss a few inches of snow and the crazies come out. By the time we came out from the play the snow was already melting and made my drive home safe.

After taking 3 days off to let my back rest I am back in the game. I am going to try to get some running in but if my back acts up I will hop on the bike instead. My gym is finally starting Hot Yoga this week at $3 a class or $19 a month. I plan to give it a try this week and see if I enjoy it better then the other study. I really want to like it, as it is so much cheaper then the other studio I was attending. 

The rough plan is but at least it is a plan:
Monday - Spin and a short test run
Tuesday - 3 Miles
Wednesday - Spin
Thursday - Hot Yoga
Friday - 4 Miles
Saturday - Hot Yoga or Rest Day
Sunday - 6-8 miles (plan calls for 8, but we will see how my back feels about that)

Friday Five

1. I need a back-e-otomy, that is a word right. Actually today my back is feeling so much better then it was earlier this week. It hurt while running Sunday night, then Monday and Tuesday my pain level was pretty high. Wednesday I was considering calling the doctor, and by Thursday I was almost pain free. 

2.  I have been antsy because I haven't been working out. Grouchy, a little short tempered and even judging other running when I see them running outside. Can we say jealous?  Clearly running is the cheapest form of therapy.

3. I think I hurt my back, again,  doing squats as part of the cross fit challenge while following the 21 day plan on the primal diet.  Now I don't blame the squats as I know they are great for me, I just think I may have set my max out number to high and caused extra strain on an already sore area when my form got sloppy. Need to be more careful

4.  I am trying not to stress out about this break, but see #2.

5. I haven't been to Yoga or Spin all week......see #2.

Fat Joe, no longer Fat

I love when a celebrity or person of interest lose weight the old fashion way - well as far as we know. The could be secretly popping pills or getting weight loss surgery, but I have to take them at face value here.

I read this article yesterday about Fat Joe.  He hit is low point last year after losing several friends to obesity. It was his wake up call that he couldn't continue to be overweight.  A few statements really stuck out to me:

Fat Joe, who is 40, is not on a specific diet, but simply follows basic steps for eating foods that are nutritious and not artery-cloggers!
“I’m goin' off what you know and what I know,” he said. “Carbs is what’s givin’ you the diabetes, and what’s givin’ people heart attacks. We can’t be carb dependent.”
It is such a basic and simple principle, we have become a society of packaged foods and foods loaded with crap so that they can sit longer on the shelf.   We just need to start making the change as a society to care about ourselves. Once we realize that we have value, that we matter as a people we will start to see a change. I really hope that in my lifetime the obesity rate starts to drop, but I also know that asking for the end of obesity is like a pageant queen asking for world peace. Its a pipe dream. All I can do is start in my home, encourage my friends and lead by example.

I am usually not one to talk about my weight loss or share my experience much. In fact I tend to shy away from it, something my husband never understands.  For example when I see another runner whose blog I follow I am timid to walk up and say hello and it usually takes all my energy to do it. What can I say I am shy.....something my friends would disagree with, but if I am out of my comfort zone I am shy. I often feel like a fraud in this 'healthy living' realm.  My goal this year is to break out of that comfort zone - be more open in real life with people about my weight loss and struggles.

New 2 U Cross Training Challenge

Kim over at (Just) Trying is for Little Girls created a challenge to try 12 'New To You' Cross Training (N2UCT) Challenges this year.  I am all up for trying new things, I really like finding Groupon's or Living Social deals for fitness classes to try. With this new challenge it will give me extra motivation to find a new workout.

The process is simple - each month look for a new way to cross train. Do it once or add it into your training schedule the choice is yours. Each month select something that is 'new to you' and go for it. What have you got to lose?

If you decide to jump in on this challenge or are looking for ideas - check out Kim's tab and contact her to be 'linked' up with the rest of us.

In thinking about my 'New to Me' cross training I started searching the web for different workouts I could try, here are some of the ideas I have stumbled upon. If you are local and considered doing one of these workouts but were afraid to join alone, hit me up and we can try it together.

N2UCT Ideas (in no particular order)
  1. Zumba - I received the Wii version for Christmas and have yet to try it
  2. Jump Sky High - Trampoline workout - this looks like so much fun
  3. Water Aerobics
  4. Swimming Lessons - I can swim, but not very well and I would love to improve
  5. Trapeze Class - I have always wanted to try one of these and see them often on the coupon sites
  6. Body Pump Class - my gym offers these and I have yet to attend one
  7. Pilate's - I had done Yoga and enjoy it I would love to try a Pilate's Class
  8. Try a new piece of equipment in the gym (have to check it out not sure what I haven't used yet)
  9. Go for a group run with strangers......a race does no count, but find a running partner or group to run with. I would also consider a City Tour run a group run. Something I have never done before.
  10. Boot Camp Class
Well that is a start, I am sure I can think of some more idea's as the warmer months arrive. Share your N2UCT ideas?

Weekend Update

This weekend we had our final Christmas celebration at my Dad's house. He spent Christmas in the Dominican Republic this year so we had to move our celebration to a day when he was back. My Dad likes to do things a little different when it comes to Christmas Dinner and I love it. Instead of a Turkey or a Ham we did Seafood. Now, I love Seafood. I specifically love clams! Since I was a child I have loved clams, to the point where if a restaurant served a bucket of clams I would order them and eat every last one. We had Salmon, Oysters and 10lbs of Clams.....of the 10lbs I believe I ate at least 5lbs myself and washed all down with a bottle of wine.  It was wonderful evening of food and family. I was extremely thankful that I went to Spin class that morning after the calories I consumed.

Sunday I woke up in pain, not from the wine but my back pain was back in full force. I decided to postpone my 6 miler until later in the day in hopes that it would start to feel better. My goal this training cycle was all long runs outside, but my back is not going to let the happen right now. Around 6PM I hit the treadmill to get the miles done. It was a bit painful after mile 2, I had to stop several times to stretch out my back. At the end of the day I completed the distance I needed to and decided that it was time to switch back to 3 runs a week instead of 4.

The plan for this week. I have no Yoga workouts planned, but I plan to work them in. We just have a busy week with things planned after work so I am not sure which days will workout best yet.

Wednesday - Spin
Thursday  - 4 Mi and Arms
Friday - Rest
Saturday - Spin

Some days just don't go as planned

And, well that's alright. Its at the end of the day you say "even with all the crazy today was a good day." Yesterday didn't go as plan, but at the end of the day it was a good day. Starting out your day with a dentist appointment that requires your mouth to be numbed is not advisable. Especially when you have to go to work afterwards and it stays numb for longer then you expect. No fun.
To make a bad day good I asked my husband to help me hang my new medal hanger from  Allied Medal Displays. I have been wanting one since I earned my first medal and finally after Christmas I ordered one. They are a local company so I emailed them asked if I could just pick it up.

Our workout area of the Garage is slowly coming together, motivation is being put up. The white board is awesome to list out my runs or workouts I need to complete for the week. I also keep my PRs listed there as a quick reminder of where I have been and where I want to go.
Under the mirror that you can't see we have a step, boxing gloves and are building our weight collection. Soon our own private gym will be complete so no excuse will be allowed. 

I got my 5 mile run in after everything was said and done last night. It was a great run! I felt strong and I got to check out my new hanger the entire time. It was actually great motivation. I need to make the area around into a motivational wall.

Day 11 of 21 - Primal Challenge:
Diet - Create a Primal Recipe  - While this seems fun, I am not good at making up recipes. For me making stuff up is grilling some veggies, cook some eggs and eat. That fits for primal right? The creative cooking gene is not in my body.

Exercise -  Workout of the Week: This was supposed to happen yesterday, but I had 5 miles planned for my HM training. So I switched it with today's workout. I figure like any other training plan its okay to move things around and adjust them as needed.  The WOW consisted of the follow:
  1. Push ups 2 sets
  2. Sprint 40-80 Meters
  3. Rest 60 sec
  4. Pull Ups - 2 sets will switch in something else since I have no pull up bar
  5. Bunny Hops - hop w/ feet together for 20-40 yards
  6. Rest 60 sec
  7. Squats 2 sets
  8. Sprint 40-80 Meters
  9. Plank max time
  10. Advanced Addition  - Sprint/Bunny Hop: Sprint 80 meters, turn around and hop 40 meters, then walk 40 meters back to the start. Rest 30 seconds, then repeat.
Lifestyle - Work Peak Performance: Basically start the day with making a to-do list. If you get pulled away from your to-do list when you get back to it prioritize your list and work methodically through each task with undivided attention.  I so need this task this week. I often make a list and then just work from it in whatever order I want. Taking care of the easy task first leaving the more difficult stuff for later.

21 Things Thursday

Wednesday Workout:
  • 45 Minutes of Spin Class in the AM, had to leave early to make it to work on time. I usually get there early to make up for it. Yesterday, I barley made it on time.
  • 65 Minutes of Hatha Hot Yoga in the PM - OMG there were over 50+ people in the class.
I mentioned early this week that I was tagged by Kathy at Just Keeps Running to do a "21 random things" list.  Here I goes nothing -  21 things about myself.

  1. My name is Jennifer the year I was born it was the #1 baby name. In fact it was the number one girl name from 1970-1984. It was in the Top 10 for 25 years (1966-1991).  In 2011 it was #120. Needless to say there are a few of us out there. 
  2. My daughter's full name is Genevieve (we call her Evie) - I like to say she was named after me only classier. Truth is we heard the name years before on TLCs Trading Spaces and it was the only girl name we could agree on.
  3. I once told a guy I liked that "Boyfriends were a winter sport and it is almost summer" as a way to break up with him. Funny thing, I am married to him now and I never hear the end of that comment.
  4. Speaking of marriage - I was married on a Thursday. We had  a small out of state wedding and we really wanted to get married on that day so we did. It was perfect.
  5. For our Honeymoon we went to the Atlantis Resort  - the deciding factor for us at the time was that it had water slides.
  6. I started playing basketball when I was 5 years old - I loved it but my senior year in high school I got burned out and stopped playing. No reason really, just feel out of love with it.
  7. Speaking of when I was 5, my parents cut my hair that was past my bum into a pixie cut that year also. I went from looking like a cute little girl to getting asked if my brother and I were identical twins. I got used to saying "I am not a boy" Yea that still stings.
  8. I didn't move out of my parents house until I was 21. It was free as long as I was in school so I didn't see the need. I wanted to make sure that when I left home I didn't need to come back.
  9. We used to go camping at Lake Chelan every year as a family. Growing up my brother used to tell me each year that a different scary animal lived in the lake so I would pass when it was my turn when we were on the boat. I remember specifically one year he told me Jaws and the next year it was alligators. Never trust an older brother.
  10.  In those camping adventures the kids would sleep under the stars on a folding lawn chair. The adults slept in the tent with the two dogs. One year it started raining and we had to fit 3 kids, 2 adults and 2 German Shepard's in a small tent. This may be the reason I no longer like camping.
  11.  I don't like mushrooms. I try them every once in a while to see if I like them and nope don't like them. I especially don't like the smell of cooked mushrooms.
  12. I love coffee - enough said.
  13. I don't like mint, unless its fresh mint in my mojito. I have only met two other people who do not like mint.  
  14. I am reader. I am not picky and read pretty much everything.  I also will read the same book twice.
  15. I am 5'8" but often get asked if I am taller. I find it odd as I always where flats maybe its just my ego. :)
  16. I am really 5'7" 3/4 or something like that per the doctors visit in December. How I am already shrinking?
  17. I have excellent eye site and don't have to wear glasses, but I kind of wish I did as there are some stylish specs out there. I also  think I look good in glasses.
  18. I was once grounded until my parents told me I was off. They forgot and two months later I asked if I could leave the yard and they were like sure.  What is funny is they were complaining to each other that I was super clingy all summer and hanging around the yard. They couldn't figure out why I wasn't leaving to play at someone else house.  
  19. I currently drive 2 VW. A 2000 VW Golf and a 2005 VW Touareg. I say I drive as my husband rides the bus daily and I do drop off/pick up off for him and my daughter then drive to work. I drive the Golf the most to save on gas.
  20. I am half Cuban. My mother was born in Cuba but our family left when Castro took over. My grandmother and aunt returned for a visit in 2011 for the first time in 50 years.  I would love to some day visit.
  21. When I as 7 we went to DisneyLand. I was terrified to go on Space Mountain so my brother convinced me that every time we go around a corner say meow. Like Meeeeooooooow - it helped me over come my fear and love the ride. That same day I told my Dad what my brother and I had been doing. When I went on it the next time with him....my dad said Meow like 100x (meow, meow, meow, meow.....)during the ride, I dont' think I explained it well enough, but it was a good laugh.
This is the post that never ends, it just goes on and one my friends. Well there you have it. 21 random facts about me. I am supposed to tag 5 people, but I all of my brain cells are dead from thinking about random items about me so - tag you are all it. Who has the time?

Tuesday's Workout, started after 8PM:
  • 2 miles - completed with sprints included
  • 20 minutes on the Bike working to keep my HR above 130
  • 15 minutes arm circuit
It seems in the New Year the number one excuse I hear people say is that they don't have time. In fact with in the first 5 minutes of the Biggest Loser you heard almost everyone say they don't have time. I am sure I said that in the past, but you know what I had time to sit  on the coach and watch shows like the Biggest Loser. Two hours out of my day sitting on the coach probably eating something unhealthy.

Yesterday, I posted on my Facebook the following statement
Day 3 of the New Year - how many people started new diet plans this week? Don't give up just because you have a craving. If it is something you really want you will make it work. Make yourself a priority in the year, find a healthy balance and find a reason to eat well, because there is always an excuse to eat bad.
You might be wondering where I am going here.  Finding the time in your normal day is about making yourself a priority in your life. Many of us work full time and have family dynamics that we have to attend to. In order for us to be the best we can we have to take care of ourselves and make time for ourselves. If you make one resolution this year it is to make yourself number one in your family because if you are happy your family will be happy.

How do I find the time? For me its about getting up early or working out late. I have a pretty crazy schedule where M/W I go to a 5:30AM class, T/TH Run usually in the evening, F/Optional day depends on what I feel like that day. S&S are usually early morning days as well. Do I like getting up early - nope, I hate it. But after the workout is done the day is just better. There is no thinking all day about the workout that I have to get done.  As Dolvette said last night - Find a way to make it work, and work it out!

On to day Day 9 of 21 - Primal Challenge:

Diet - Track Macronutirent Intake - Done and Done. I use the BodyBugg Software prior to switching to this diet, so I can input my information in pretty easily and figure it all out.  This diet has you work towards getting your protein intake 50-100 grams per day for fat loss and 100-150 to maintain ideal body composition. I try to reach close to 100 grams daily by having some sort of protein with each meal and snack.

Exercise - Increase daily movement  - Simple enough.

Lifestyle - Media Fast - Ingest all of your news and information today during 10-minute time blocks in the morning and in the evening. This one is going to be tough as I spend a lot more then 10 minutes reading blogs.

Tag you are it

Ok, not really, but its been a while since I have played tag. Yet, I was still tagged by Kathy at Kathy Just Keeps Running to do a "21 random things" list. Thanks for the tag Kathy and but I can't think of 5 things to share about myself let alone 21. I will work on it and see if I can figure something out for a post later this week! Thanks for the tag.

Monday morning I was planning on getting up early and going to Spin class, but when the alarm went off at 5AM I hit snooze. This was my extra day off before heading back to work, why oh why did I plan to get up to workout so early. I did wonder how many new gym members would make it my 5:30AM spin class, I guess I will find out Wednesday when I show up.  I got my ride in around 10AM at home.
I pulled out my old Polar Heart Rate monitor, I figure if I don't have a computer on my bike I can at least work my heart rate during my rides. I used this calculator and it suggested 131 to 168  - Higher than average Fitness - Vigorous exercise. When I was pushing heavy resistance -  it was between 130-140, and then down to 120. Now that I have more of a baseline I can focus on keeping my heart rate up for longer periods of time while I am riding. 

On to day Day 8 of 21 - Primal Challenge:

Diet - No labels Challenge - Instead of reading "Nutritional Facts" on the packed foods just avoid them all together.  This is a bit tough for me as I have already gone grocery shopping for the week. However the foods that I am eating the come out of a package or have a label, I know what is in them. The bare  minimum.

Exercise - Sprint Workout - Complete a few Sprints as part of your workout. This will be no problem as today I have a 2 mile easy run planned. I think instead I will change it up and add a few sprints into this workout. The plan calls for six sprints lasing 10-30 seconds wrapped into a 15-20  minute workout session. This will be fun and challenging at the same time. I think in the past I have maxed out at 7mph on the treadmill for 15 seconds. I wonder what I can do today.

Lifestyle - Go barefoot! Try to go barefoot or use minimalist footwear for at least 60 minutes today. Easy peasy! I would go barefoot all day if the world was a cleaner place, but because it isn't I just go without shoes in our home. As for working out without shoes, while that sounds awesome to me in theory right now my ankles and Achilles can't handle it.  Maybe I will walk on the treadmill barefoot for a few minutes at the end of my sprints.
Overall I am getting the hang or Primal eating although to someone who is more extreme I might fail. When I went grocery shopping this yesterday I was more aware of looking at labels of even foods that were labeled organic. I was specifically looking for some dried fruit without added sugars and was unable to find any at my local Safeway store. I went to PCC in hopes they would have  bulk section but they don't at the one by my house. Next stop this week will be Whole Foods and Trader Joes hopefully I can find what I need with little problems. I did pick up some Coconut Flour and plan to make some coconut pancakes this week. We shall see how they turn out.

When do I get my medal?

For the past few day's my daughter has begged to go for a run. Finally yesterday after taking down our Christmas decorations and eating some lunch we set out for our run. It was beautiful out for a January day in Washington. The Sun was out the air was crisp yet warm so I drove us to a local trail for some controlled chaos. I wore my Garmin so that I could keep track of how far we had gone and the time. The run started out as sprint as far as you can and then rest. This little one is fast!

After a few of those, I said why don't we run for 1 minute and then walk for 1 minute. She agreed and we worked through a few cycles. About .4 miles in she stopped and looked at me and said "So when do I get my medal for this race?"

It took a while to explain that this was just a training run and we don't get medals. I am not sure she understands that people run for all different reasons. She was completely bummed, but after a promise to find her a race soon she was ready to run some more.  We turned around just shy of 1 mile and headed back to our car. The run/walk back was a lot slower, it was her normal nap time and she kept saying she was just exhausted. Just shy of 2 miles on her first run attempt, not to shabby. I told her we would need to have a few more training runs before her race. Looks like I might have a new training partner.
The weekend was tough, I had a bit of a splurge meal on New Years Eve  - take out Mexican, I wasn't feeling 100% before dinner.  Every time I stood up I got dizzy, but as long as I was sitting I was ok. I ended up eating way to much and then felt ill the rest of the evening. It was a good reminder of what I used to do weekly in the past. On to day Day 7 of 21 - Primal Challenge:

Diet - Intuitive Meals - Basically eat whatever foods I feel like with in cultural breakfast, lunch and dinner traditions.  Since this is my last day off before heading back to work, I am sure my day will look something like this in regards to food - egg scramble for breakfast, super protein shake smoothie and nuts for lunch  and dinner will be fish and asparagus. I am sure there will be a few cups of coffee in there also and plenty of water.

Exercises/Lifestyle - Grand Play Outing - find something fun to do outdoor with the family. Not sure yet what we will do, but if the weather permits we will head outdoors, if the weather does not play nice then maybe hit up the gym pool.
My plan for the week looks something like this:
Although I already see a few tweaks coming as I have until 1/4 to use up 2 yoga sessions, so I might do Yoga on Monday and Wednesday to fit them in. Then I need to buy more sessions if I plan to keep going to this location. My gym is supposed to have there Hot Yoga ready by mid January but they don't have a schedule up so I am not sure what I am going to do yet.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year anyone else need one of these this morning? One year I was crazy enough to give up coffee for 6 months. Last year I think I was challenged to one month and my husband was challenged to no fast food for a month......6 days in we laughed as we were sitting in a Dairy Queen and I was drinking coffee from Tully's while they ate.

This year no resolutions were set as I don't feel like I need to set a resolution to get things done. I have 2012 Goals in place and I have already started taking steps to reach them.

Whether you set resolutions or goals may 2012 be a year that are proud of in all aspects of your life.
