I took the challenge

Run with Jess challenged the bloggyland to get out there and Spin during the month of August.  My goal was to reach the SPINSTAR level and attend 6 classes in the month of August.

What I actually accomplished was 4 classes as of this morning. Even though I didn't met the goal I set out to reach I did get that love of Spin class back and I am already planning on working it into my schedule more. 2 of the 4 classes I attended were morning classes before work. With a little creative planning and help from the hubs I hope to continue to attend the Wednesday morning 5:30AM class. If I could just talk my gym into moving it to 5AM it would be perfect, but since there were only 6 people in the 5:30AM class I should be happy the class that is available.

If you haven't tried Spin I would highly recommend it, this is coming from someone who has not owned a bike in years and really has no desire to own one now. :)  I was intimated for a long time but glad I finally got the courage to try it.

Are you a regular Spin-STAR? Have you tried a Spin class, if so what do you think?

Last bit of Sunshine

I had planned to run while we were away. I packed everything figured I could get up early before the sun came out in full force but it never happened.  I did get in some swimming, tubing, cliff jumping and mini golf!

We went to SunBanks Lake Resort in Eastern, WA. I live on the wrong side of the mountain range in Washington as they have sun, and well we have....the 60s as in 60s degree's all the time. Where was I, oh yea Banks Lake and sunshine! We arrived Friday with the knowledge that they lake was going through a Draw Down, meaning the drain water in order to do repairs. Banks Lake is actually a reservoir that was created when the Grand Coulee Dam was built. (A note for anyone wanting to visit the Grand Coulee Dam, don't stay for the laser show it is not as "cool" as everyone says, we left early because my 4 year old was over it.)

We were promised by the resort that even though the draw down was taking place there were beautiful beaches still....hmmmm not so much. If you count that you had to walk through 20 yards of yuck then maybe so. Either way we the husband and his friend scouted out a nice beach up river that we went to each day. That with a small swim across a channel allowed for some cliff jumping.  We had a great time, but will not go back to SunBanks Lake Resort again because they had terrible customer service....terrible.

A few photos from our trip:

Doing shadow poses
Impact of the Draw Down...the water was supposed to be where I was.
We could only use the last few slips for our Seadoo.

Me and my mini me

It was a great time and what I needed to say good bye to summer. Oh summer how I will miss thee, I am still hoping that it will stay warm into September, but I am not getting my hopes up.   Now the fun starts training, well 'offical training' for my second half marathon.

Back to reality

My husband and I joke you know you are off vacation when you have to put real shoes on. You know, you can't wear flip flops to work.

The plan this week besides doing a mound of laundry and I thought I packed light is to get the following workouts in:

Tuesday - Easy Run - 2 Mi @ 14:17
Wednesday - Spin Class
Thursday - Tempo run 4 Mi w/ 2 @ 12:32
Friday - Easy Run - 2 Mi @ 14:17
Saturday - Spin Class
Sunday - Long Run 8 Mi (eeek! longest run in a while)

I know that is 6 days in a row so if I need a rest day I will skip the Spin Class on Saturday. The month is almost over! Crazy! I need to look at September and set some goals.  Right now I am 13 weeks out from my next half, I also want to work in kickboxing once a week. Maybe I should do that Saturday instead of Spin.....hmmmm wait I just said that might be a rest day. My training plan, just bumped me up to 4 runs a week until the half, so I guess something has to give right. I really enjoyed the kickboxing class, but my Living Social coupon in over and the Spin class is free with my gym membership. For now I will just play it by ear and see what happens.

Do you have any goals for September?  Care to share?

Cliff jumping = a workout right?

Just got back in town after a wonderful long weekend!
I like to call that my cross training workout.
That's me and yes I still plug my nose when I jump in the water.

I love me a good Friday

Today is a good day, I just completed a 6AM spin class and when I walked outside the sun was already shinning! I love a sunny day in Washington it just puts a smile on my face. Oh course it could also be that I am going into a 4 day weekend today and well not much gets better then that except a 5 day weekend.

I wanted to give a shout out to all the female bloggers running the HTC today! The best of luck to you and I cannot wait to read your reviews.

That's all I have time for today. Time to hit the showers and get this day started.

Whats on your agenda for the day, while you be following the HTC from twitter and Facebook?

Remembering to smile when you see the photographer always helps to make a great race photo. From having terrible ones in the past, I have learned no matter how bad you heart just put on a small. Not only does it lift your spirits for a while during the race, but it also makes your photo not look bad.  I also started making some silly faces which is also a fun way to lift your spirits as well.

Words Wednesday

Sean and Evie
I opened up a new post several times yesterday and well had nothing to say. But today on this lovely Wednesday I have something very important to say.......HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my hubs. Today he turns 34, yup I like older men it doesn't really count if he is only 8 months. Either way to day is his birthday and I hope that I can make it a wonderful day for him. My daughter and I ordered a cake for him earlier this week. I let her pick out the decoration so it should be fun.

What that means for me in terms of working out. It means I got my booty up at 4:55AM to hit they gym Spin Class before work.  I have never been to this particular class I usually hit up the weekend classes, but it was a good one.  One benefit of dragging myself out of bed before work is when I get home I get to relax. I need to do this more often I hate the idea of a workout looming over my head in the evening.  The one downside of this is I didn't get my 5 miles done until shortly after 9PM last night, crashed around 11PM - not enough sleep and my body was feeling it. It was a tight time frame from gym to work but I made it work out. I am thankful that  my 4 year old was being cooperative this morning.

A look at my week so far:
Mon - 2 miles, abs and some arm work - done
Tue - Easy run 5Mi @14:20 done
Wed - Spin Class - done

I love crossing things off my list!  Of course whats left is going to be tough - but I will get it done. I wonder if I can drag my booty out of bed two days in a row. It would be easier then trying to complete that run Thursday night.  The one thing I am most worried about is my Sunday run still trying to figure out the logistics to that.

Thur - Speed work 4Mi, Inc Warm, 2x1600 in 12:00 w/800 jogs, cool
Fri - Spin Class
Sat - Rest
Sun -Long Run 6 Mi @14:20

Whats the earliest you get up to workout? Are you a morning person or do you have to drag yourself out of bed like me?

Planning

Ever look at your week and think - how am I going to make this work. This week is one of those weeks, I just keep reminding myself that running and weight loss are a priority and I need to find the time or make the time even in my busy schedule. On the plus side I feel so much better today - my summer cold is gone! Woot! I think the extra rest really helped it not last long and linger.

The plan for this week:
Mon - 2 miles, abs and some arm work
Tue - Easy run 5Mi @14:20
Wed - Spin Class
Thur  - Speedwork 4Mi, Inc Warm, 2x1600 in 12:00 w/800 jogs, cool
Fri - Spin Class
Sat - Rest
Sun -Long Run 6 Mi @14:20

Whats on your agenda for the week?

Hello Sunshine

all smiles at 6AM WTF?
I know, I know most people will think I am crazy when I get excited about 80 degree weather or the sun. But unless you live in the Seattle area you will not understand what it is like to have months and months of 60 degrees.  This morning I woke up at 5:50AM to get ready for my 10K and the sun was out! It was going to be a beautiful day. A typical sunny day in Seattle starts out cooler and ends in the high 70's, maybe 80s. This morning was anything but cool! It was glorious and sunny!  I will never talk bad about the sun, but I think I got a taste of what everyone has been complaining about all summer. It was HOT today at 7:30AM when the run started! I think we had about 5% shade cover the entire run, every person I saw was sweating.

View from the start/finish line

I was thankful that yesterday I picked up a Nathan handheld water bottle, while my hand was sweaty from the run, it was so nice to have something to drink. I started my morning with a cocktail of cold medicine which helped keep the cold symptoms away, but my lungs were feeling the run for sure. I meet a couple of really nice people along the way, one girl was running her first 10K and we kept leap frogging each other. Finally I dropped off running with her and I never caught back up with her. It is nice to have such a great running community out there, no matter what level you are at you are bound to find someone to chat with while you run. One lady even ran by me and said - awesome blue socks, such great energy!

Post run...covered in sweat!

Post run there was supposed to be a pancake breakfast, which meant here was no post run bagel...boo. I didn't wait in line for pancakes as honestly I don't think my stomach could take it. I walked back to my car and headed for home. A mega smoothie was made once I got home followed by a large cup of coffee :)!

My time wasn't where I wanted it, but it was where I needed it to be for my half marathon training plan. My plan today called for 6 miles @ 14:23 and I did 6.21 miles at 13:34 - slower then what I wanted, but better then my plan called, so its a win right? Either way I am happy that I am done with it and look forward to beating that time next month at the Iron Girl 10K.

What was your Sunday like? What did you accomplish before 9AM?

Friday, so good to see you

A while back I won a give away on Run with Jess blog. What did I win you ask - I won a credit to Family Fun Club.  The folks and Family Fun Club make shirts, thanks, sweatshirts or basically whatever you want, with whatever you want on it. After some communications between the two of us I decided on my new top.  I checked the mail tonight and it had arrived!  I totally love it and I can see it being the item I wear a lot this fall when training for my half or just lounging around the house! Love it!  If you need a shirt made they are the way to go.

I woke up this morning feel run over by a truck. My ears are plugged and I think I was swallowing swords last night as I barley have voice.  I am worried about running my 10K on Sunday. I have 4 miles to run today and I am going to see how I feel afterwards, I figure it can go either way. Feel freaking fantastic or feel like death so its worth a shot. :) Unless I wake up feeling great on Saturday I am going to skip Spin Class to save my energy for the 10K. Its such a fine line to walk when you are sick.

The final weight loss for the week is 3lbs! I am beyond excited and plan to stay on track this weekend instead of cheating all weekend and then fighting for 5 days to lose the weekend gain plus more.

Life As I See It [Fitness, Health and Happiness]I hope everyone has a great weekend. Linking up today - Fitness Friday Blog hop over at Life..As I See It.

Sicko Thursday

Last night before I went to bed I started to get a sore throat, you know the one that feels like you are swallowing razor blades. I slept like crap because of it and now feel like I am part of the walking dead! I am hoping with enough fluids and medication I will feel better tonight. Clearly my body was telling me something the other night when I feel asleep instead of running.  I am glad I can easily adjust my cross training schedule so that I can fit all of my runs in. I really enjoy my cross training classes I am taking, but right now they are not a priority. Getting my mileage in is my number one goal and increasing my endurance base overall.

In other news last night I completed my 4 mile run on the treadmill at a 2% incline. I forgot to adjust it when I started and I kept thinking man this feels strange, once I made the adjustment the run went so much smoother.  During last night run I tried out my first Running Skirt. For those out there who have the athletic style running skirt, how do you keep the shorts from riding up? I feel like I got the right size, I had read online that you should go a size down when you order so that is what I did. All suggestions are welcome. I really like the running skirt for my treadmill workouts as I am not as hot as if I am wearing capris.

It is not an official weekly weigh in day but I stepped on the scale this morning and I am down 2lbs from last week. I think the Clean Eating attempt has really helped me get the scale moving, the goal now will be how I can work on eating more 'clean' on the weekend.  I don't know about you guys but the weekends are always difficult for me to stay on track.

Run Its Got Me

Last night the goal was to get a 4 mile run in and that didn't happen! Instead I laid down with my daughter when I was putting her to bed and feel asleep. I figured my husband would wake me when he was off his conference call. He might have tried, but I woke up around 9PM, went and made lunches for today and went back to bed.  While I am frustrated that I missed the run, it must not have bothered me that much as I didn't get up this morning to run.  I will just shift my schedule and run tonight instead of going to Spin Class.

I need to make a play list for my 10K this weekend. Do you have a power song? A favorite artist  you listen to? Or do you run without music? I have done a couple of runs without music, but I am thinking Sunday I am going to need the extra motivation that music brings.

Tired Tuesday

I think Tuesday is the new Monday. I am so sleepy this morning, but I think it is to the point where getting more sleep is not going to help.  Last night I went to a 7PM movie with my book club ladies to see The Help. I really enjoy this move and think they did a great job adapting the movie from the book. This was the first movie in a long time that I did not get any popcorn, candy or drink while in the movie theater. It was tough but I made sure to eat before I went so I wasn't hungry.
Yesterday I started a challenge of eating clean. I made it until dinner time before going off script. The original plan was to eat Thai lettuce wraps at happy hour with my book club, but things came up and I missed the happy hour part. Instead a gobbled done a bowl of Cheerios and a banana with Chocolate Almond Butter and head out.   Today I am more prepared and I think I can make it through the day without any incidents.

It was nice to have a rest day on Monday, strange but nice. Today my plan calls for 4 Mi @14:23, I have been warming up at 14:23, and then doing the rest of my mileage in the 13:30 range. I will probably do that again tonight and just go for a full 60 minutes. With my 10K on Sunday I want to work on some endurance. My last 10K time was 1:18:23 and right now I don't know if I will beat that time, but I hope by the Iron Girl 10K I will be able to.

Now the question that has been bugging me for a few days......do you keep your Peanut Butter or Almond Butter in the cabinet or the refrigerator? We have always kept our Peanut Butter in the cabinet, but after this week I got to thinking, does Almond Butter need to be put in the fridge? What do you do?

Weekly Plan

Source

We had a really busy weekend and Sunday morning I just couldn't get myself moving. Saturday I knew I had to get up early and Sunday I had nothing planned for the day. Of course this came back to bite me as I didn't get to run until 8:30PM  - oh well I queued up some Nip/Tuck and worked it out.

This weeks plan:
Monday  - Rest (actually going to see The Help with my book club)
Tuesday- Easy Run - 4 Mi @14:23
Wednesday - Spin Class or Kickboxing not sure which one yet
Thursday - Tempo Run - 4 Mi; inc warm up, 2 @12:39; cool
Friday - Rest
Saturday - Spin Class and maybe kickboxing after, depends on the weather if it is sunny we will head to the lake after Spin Class. Cloudy I get and extra workout in.
Sunday - Lake Union 10K (which match's my plan of 6Mi)

I am actually looking forward to this week I think that I will be able to hit all of my workouts. The only thing I am not looking forward to is make some modifications in my eating habits. I signed up for a Facebook Challenge to attempt to eat clean for 5 days. This one is going to be tough, but I look forward to the challenge, I might of had one or two extra chocolate chip cookies today knowing that tomorrow I will resist them.  My biggest weakness is giving up my coffee, I am not sure I will do that as I enjoy my creamer in my coffee a little to much.  Oh and protein powder in my smoothies, not sure if that is allowed - but if I am giving up Greek Yogurt for a week I will need a smoothie with extra protein.

Have you given up processed foods before? If so what is your biggest weakness?

p.s. thank you for all the wonderful comments on my Friday's post.  I really appreciated the perspective and the extra motivation to keep pushing.

Double Down Saturday

I was determined to overcome my past few workouts that were less then stellar. I challenged myself to take two class back to back.  Up first was a Spin Class at 7:30AM, my alarm went off a little before 7AM and I grabbed some breakfast before the class.

Small OJ, Almond butter and a banana

Off to class, I was not really awake and actually sat in my car for a minute thinking what the hell am I doing.

Spin class was ahhhhhmazing, I had half an hour to grab a snack and get to the next class which was at a different location. I had a protein bar and a 5 hour energy on the way to my next glass, of course washed down with more water.

The protein bar was a fail, but I ate most of it anyways. I think it was left over from a grab bag at my last race. Not a fan of the cookie dough flavor .

Post kickboxing class I was soaking wet. Something is going on with my body as I have recently started sweating 10x more then I did in the past. I also rocked the high pony tail as forgot a headband, my hair looked like a peacock a little bit.

What does a girl need after rocking an amazing workout! Pedicures with the little one. While I went with a simple blue, Evie rocked lime green and hot pink!

Two great workouts to make up for a week of bad workouts. I think I am going to try to make this a regular Saturday morning. Of course I say that now we will have see what next Saturday brings.

Have you ever done a double workout, or brick workout? What is your favorite combo?

Spare Legs

I need a pair of spare legs today. Last night I wanted to knock out an easy 3 mile run, I head to the treadmill a bit late and a half mile in I called it quits. My legs just refused to move even at a slow pace.  I even thought I was taking it easy this week since I switched out a kickboxing class for the elliptical. My goal is to now fit this run in today sometime, nothing wrong with switching up my rest day.

I know they are are going to be days when you have a bad workout, a bad weigh in or a bad run, but knowing they will happen doesn't make it any easier to take. Many bloggers have posted over the week about what being a runner means, or how to determine if you are a runner. This is something that I have struggled with and still struggle with. I can never seem to answer the question if I am a runner without adding......a but....I am not fast or I  add some other put down on myself about it. I think what I am missing in running is confidence and I am not sure how to find that. I hope as I continue to run I will gain the knowledge and confidence to respond - Yes I am a runner, are you? The next time someone asks me that question.

Are there area's of runner or fitness that you struggle with? Any tips to overcoming  those struggles?

Friday Eve

It might be Friday Eve, but I still have my three things to share with you on Thursday.

  1. I have started thinking about Thursday as really Friday Eve! If I can push through today then tomorrow will be Friday!  Yesterday  I ordered two new pairs of compression socks because since I started training again I have been wearing a black pair of RunLove Compression socks.  They are wonderful, my legs have been feeling great and I have not gotten a black toe nail yet.  Since I only had one pair I decide that I need to invest in a few more pairs to get me through this training cycle.  I can't wait to wear them on longer runs. I also think that they will be helpful as the weather starts to cool in helping to keep my legs warm as I like to run in capris.
  2. Last night I made the best soup ever and I can't wait to eat the leftovers. I took a simple Potato Cheddar Soup that and pumped it up with veggies - adding cabbage, fennel, broccoli, onion and celery. I loved that it gets me my extra veggies and ands just a little change in the flavor of the soup. My favorite part of making soup is eating it over he next few days as the flavors really start to blend together.
  3. I have been hitting the treadmill a lot lately. By the time I can run its dark out and I don't like running in the dark. I have a white board next to my treadmill so I decided to write my goal each run on the board. This helps to keep it fresh in my mind when I am running. I added a few comments to the board also for motivation. Sayings like Run, Run, and then RUN some more, Get your hands of the treadmill and you are stronger then you think - go!  This weekend I plan to take my medals and hang next to the whiteboard so that I have a constant reminder as to why I am doing this, extra motivation to push myself harder.
Do you have a favorite brand of compression socks?

What about a hearty and healthy soup, whats your favorite?

Happy Wednesday

The winner of the SPIBelt Giveaway was selected because today is Wednesday. You might be wondering how those two relate.  When I think of Wednesday I think of Wednesday Addams because and old coworker was teasing me that I should have named may daughter that.  In order to find a number to select the winner from I did a little research on Wednesday Addams.  Did you know: (thanks wikipedia)
    File:Wednesday-Addams.jpg
  • She received her name based on the well-known nursery rhyme line, "Wednesday's child is full of woe".
  • She is explicitly stated to be six years old in the series' pilot episode.
  •  In the 1960s Television series, she is significantly more sweet-natured, although her favorite hobby is raising spiders.
  • She is also a ballerina.
  • Wednesday's favorite toy is her Marie Antoinette doll, which her brother guillotined
  • She has six toes on one foot
My favorite random fact is that she has 6 toes on one foot, but the fact that she liked raising spiders is also interesting....so lets go with 6 toes + 8 spider legs for the winner being comment #14 and that comment belongs to Marisa @ The Pace of my Life
Marisa email me at runnermaybe @hotmail.com and with your email address and I will pass it along to the awesome rep at SPIBelt.

Last night the plan was either kickboxing class or treadmill - well I ended up going to the gym and doing the elliptical for 50 minutes. I haven't been to the gym in a while so I figured I would get some use out of my membership. I added a nice long stretch routine and some ab work to complete the workout.  The workout was great but the entire time I burped spaghetti sauce, I really need to give up red sauce as it just doesn't sit well especially if I am going to workout after dinner.  Another food that gives me the worst burps when working out is cucumbers......what the heck is up with that.

If you have kids did people suggest crazy names for your children?

Is there any food you need to avoid before working out?

T-t-t-t-t-t-tuesday

Last night I decided to run the make up 5 miles from Sunday. I have two weeks until my next 10K and I haven't ran 6 miles in a while, so I felt like I needed to fit this run in.  My schedule had me doing a long slow run, so that is what I did.  It felt good, I started working on my form a little bit and realized I really need to read up on that. My husband has mentioned that to me before and I think now is as good as time as any to work on that.

Have you worked on changing your running form before? Have any good links to share?

On my schedule tonight is Kickboxing, but I think I am going to switch it with a shorter run as I just don't feel like going tonight. I feel like I have to much stuff to get done during the daylight hours. I can hit the treadmill after I put the little one to bed tonight. Sometimes just figuring out when to workout stresses me out.  I need to get on a better schedule where the workout is just part of my daily life.
One more day to enter my SPIbelt giveaway - check it out a winner will be selected tomorrow.

Making up mileage

A comment in my post below got me thinking. Should I make up the mileage I missed yesterday? I am still very early in my half training, however I have a 10K in a few weeks and I haven't ran 6 miles in a while. This was also supposed to act as my long run for the week, so I feel like I need to make it up today. If I do 5 miles today that will be 5 more miles for the week then my plan called for - I am on the fence right now on what to do.

Radish and Fennel Salad RecipeThis weekend my dad made us a light salad for dinner that I was surprised about. I am not a fan or radishes and I have never had fennel before  - but I thought that this Radish and Fennel Salad from Cooking Light was really tasty and plan to make it again this week.  I think adding some chicken will make it a tasty lunch.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup thinly sliced radishes
  • 1 cup thinly sliced fennel
  • 1/2 cup thinly sliced celery
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped ni├žoise olives
  • 5 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Preparation

  • Combine radishes, fennel, celery, and olives in a large bowl. Combine lemon juice, olive oil, salt, and black pepper. Drizzle juice mixture over radish mixture.

What do you do when you miss a run?

Any recipes that surprised you lately?

Just one more day

Last week started out so well, then I hit Thursday and a little stomach troubles turned 4 miles into 2, it is now Sunday and I haven't gotten my 5 miles in today and find it highly doubtful that I will.

This weekend has been a whirlwind of fun and I think I need a day or to to recover. Saturday started out with a birthday party at a bouncy house place and ended attempting to camp in my dad's backyard with 2 small dogs and a 4 year old. We lasted 30 minutes before she looked at me and said "Mom this isn't going to work" - which I quickly agreed to and we moved inside.  My night was sleepless because  I was sharing a bed with 2 small dogs and a 4 year old, but the worst part was the trains the went by about every hour and blow there horn through the intersection. Some train drivers were nice and others blew the horn for a good 20-30 seconds.  Oh well, my daughter had a wonderful time and that is what is important, even if I don't think I slept at all last night.

The plan for this week:
Monday - 5M make up run @14:27
Tue - Kickboxing Class
Wed - 4M @ 14:24
Thur - 3 M@ 14:24
Fri - Rest
Sat - Spin Class and Kickboxing Class
Sun - 4M @ 14:24

My 7 Links and Fitness Friday Blog Hop

This was a tough one to complete. In fact I have been trying to figure out which post to put in each of the 7 categories for about a week.  I was tagged to post “My 7 links” by Crystal at Am I a runner of just crazy.

Most Beautiful Post:  A recent post Brain Cancer Blog –a guest spot by my husband’s Cousin Kelly.  It reminds me how precious life is and to remember to tell people you love them and hold them for the extra second in a hug.
Most Popular Post: my Self-High Five post had the most views, besides my giveaways but I don’t know if it was the most popular. I don’t really feel like any of my posts were popular.

Most Controversial Post:  I don’t really have any controversial post, but I believe that my Open Letter to Kickboxing lady could have become one very easily. It actually took me a lot of time to word it so I didn’t sound like I was attacking her or the jealous chubby chick in the back of the room. Some workout clothing should be kept indoors.
Most Helpful Post: Remembering  - this post had such positive feedback and reminded me that weight loss and running is a journey.

Post Whose Success Surprised Me:  The response to my first 10K.  I loved all the support and feedback from the blogging community.
Post That Didn’t Get the Attention it Deserved:   Bloggers are invading my dreams. Thankfully I haven’t had any more blogger dreams.

Post You are Most Proud of: My half marathon recap. I proud because I accomplished something I never thought I would even attempt.

I tag:

3 Things Thursday

1. This morning I let a lady go in front of me at the Starbucks drive through. We both arrived from different directions at the same time. I was in no hurry so I waved her ahead of me. She ended up buying my coffee! Its the little things that matter!

2. I went to kickboxing class and Ms. Pikachu was there. This time she was wearing shorts in blue. I think that is the only style workout clothing she has.

3. I didn't drag my booty out of bed this morning to run which means I will have the pleasure *insert eye roll* to run while watching SpongeBob tonight. That is the only way I will be able to get my run in today.  I wonder if it will be my fastest run to date just to get it over with.

Open Letter to Lady in kickboxing class

Dear Lady in Kickboxing Class,

I want to give you mad props for getting out and joining our class. I am usually not one to worry about others in the class, but the entire class I had the risk of seeing your pikachu. I am glad that you have self confidence to wear those very short shorts to class, but please think again before wearing them to this class.

They started as what I like to call as booty shorts and by the end of the class it looked like you had on a bikini bottom.  The entire class I wanted to quote friends and say "Hey buddy, this is a family place. Put the mouse back in the house."

All I ask is next time think about the activities you will be performing before selecting your workout gear.  Lets work together to keep the class pikachu free.

Thanks you,

Girl drowning in sweat

Brain Cancer Blog Guest Spot

This post is brought to by our Team Captain Kelly of Team Amazing Joe!

Mom and Dad 30th year Anniversary
Mary Kay and Joe
I will never forget the year 2008; it was the year my entire life was turned upside down. I found out my father had brain cancer.

Before his diagnosis my parents and I had just returned from Florida. My dad retired from Boeing after working there for over thirty years. He decided he wanted to become a marine surveyor so he enrolled in the Chapman school of Marine Surveying. When his course work was coming to an end my mom, grandma and I met with him to celebrate his licensure and the beginning of Dowell Marine Surveying. There was also a call for another celebration as it was my parents 30th year wedding
anniversary.
We returned to our daily routines after our great trip to Florida. One night I had just finished another grueling three hour boxing training session and was running errands on the way home. I received a phone call from my mom.

The next sequence of events would be forever imprinted in my mind.

When I arrived at our house, there was an ambulance and a fire truck outside and my dog was pacing rather than happily greeting everyone. I walked into the kitchen and my mom told me the news my dad had a seizure. The aid asked him who I was, he paused looked at me and said, “my daughter, Kelly.”
We went to the hospital where they performed several tests to determine that brain cancer had been the cause of the seizure. Few people ever expect something tragic and life altering to happen to them, but my father’s diagnosis was amplified since he had already overcome Stevens-Johnson syndrome, an autoimmune disease that was largely unknown when he was diagnosed. Despite several brushes with death due to Stevens-Johnson, my dad was able to overcome and manage his disease. More inspiring, he was never angry that he was sick and as a result spent much of his young adult life in hospitals. In fact, he kept a sense of humor and a giving heart even when he was sick with brain cancer. His actions reflected the value he saw in life and people; he knew the legacy one leaves will outlive their fortunes.

My Dad and I at the park when I was three.
My father is no longer here today, but he is my inspiration and the reason I am reaching out to you. I don’t want anyone to have to lose a loved one, friend or father to this disease.

Like my dad said, You only get one chance at life, but once is enough if you work it right.” So let’s work together to end this disease.
Thanks for joining me!

Sincerely,
Kelly

Hey Tuesday, its me sleep

Some days I think it is harder to wake up on Tuesday then it was on Monday.  Oh well, last night I had an awesome workout at Warrior Fitness. I think this workout may go down in record as the first workout to make me sweat.....and I mean dripping sweat. I had drips of sweat rolling down my forehead, this does not happen often to me. When I got home my sports bra was WET! I did notice that the temperature in the classroom was 76 degree's so I think that might of had something to do with it.  I was so glad that I dropped a NUUN tablet in my water bottle before heading out for the class as I really think it helped me push through. The teacher was relentless!

After class I made a new favorite smoothie: coconut milk, vanilla protein powder, banana and chocolate syrup!  It was so good! I don't know why I didn't think of adding chocolate syrup before it is only 100 calories for 2 tablespoons and you don't need much.

Whats on deck for Tuesday 4M @14:27 - hopefully my legs will want to move tonight.

Not your average fanny pack

A few weeks back I won a blog contest from Run with the Heart what did I win, I won a SPIBelt.

Since I started training in January I have always had the problem of what do I carry when I run and how do I make it all fit. In the winter and spring it was easy; just wear a coat that had pockets. This allowed me to carry my phone, ID, keys, iPod and fuel with little problem. However as the months warmed I would wear my coat, take it off before the end of mile one and they just tie it around my waist. In fact when I ran my half in May I started with a coat and 2 miles in I took it off. That meant for the rest of the time I had my coat around my waist. Not the most convent way to run.
I had been eyeing the SPIBelt for a few months but hadn’t pulled the trigger. The worst part about running for me is fear I am going to lose my car key when I am doing a race. I usually tie it to the inside of my pants and check it 100x to make sure it didn’t drop.

With the SPIBelt I no longer had to worry about this. My second fear is that it would bounce and move around. As a runner what is…ummm a little larger than most I have an irrational fear of things not fitting.  This was not the case with the SPIBelt,  I put it on jumped up and down and it didn’t move. I loaded my cell phone, ID, debt card and house keys in it, placed in on my hip area under my shirt and set out for a run.  It stayed in place! It didn’t move once and I could hardly tell it was there.  I used it again yesterday when I went to the park with my daughter. There nothing better than being hands free and able to play at the park without feeling your phone or keys in your pockets or worrying about them falling out.
The wonderful people at SPIBelt have offered u p a coupon code for 10% off just use blog11, but wait there is more they are giving you a chance to win a SPIBelt for free with a blog giveaway.

July Recap

How the heck is it already August. August is one of my favorite months in Washington as usually it is beautiful and sunny. When everyone else is getting sick of summer it finally starts to hit us Washington residents. A special thanks to Mother Nature for welcoming us into Washington with the sun shinning this morning.

For July, I thought I did pretty good on my goals:
- Start Kickboxing using the Living Social Coupon I picked up   Done, I am going 2x a week and loving it.
- Attend 4 Spin Classes - Fail! I didn't make it to one class
- Run my hill 2x a week - Done
- Start push up challenge again, with 'real' push ups - Started, but then cancelled as we do a lot of push ups in the kickboxing class
- Run 9 miles a week in any combination of runs - hmm, I worked up to getting in the mileage
- Run the See Jane Run 5K in under 39 minutes - Done and with a PR
- Register for the Amica Seattle Half Marathon - Done
- Lose a few lbs - ehh...

Here are the goals for August:
- 2 kick boxing class a week
- Go hiking with the kiddo 1x
- Attend 2 Spin Classes
- Run my hill 4x this month
- Run 11 miles a week in any combination of runs
- Evaluate my level at the end of the month and maybe register for a half in September
- Lose a few lbs
- Run a 10K

The list of things I want to accomplish this month is large, but I think with a little planning I can make it work.  I think the hardest things for me to accomplish is going to be making it to Spin Class, I am going to have to get creative for that one.

Do you set monthly goals? Does it help you accomplish more when you have a list of goals to work towards?
