Is your shampoo making you fat?

Really, really you want me to believe that the chemicals in my shampoo are making me fat! I am not good at science, heck I took college biology twice and then decided that should switch my degree from Occupational Therapist to General Studies.  I just don't know you can read the full article here.   Now I have to decide between having beautiful locks and being fat, well that's a tough one. I kid I kid, or do I. The one thing that I can complete agree on with this article is this statement: ...one point on which traditional obesity researchers and environmental scientists agree: Eat plenty of fresh, organic vegetables. And while you're at it, get out into the fresh air and get some exercise.  I think they hit the nail on the head with that statement, to bad its at the very end of the article and most people won't make it that far and freak out before then. I really hope that my Biolage shampoo is not making me fat because I love it. It would be like asking me to give up coffee.....not going to happen.

In completely unrelated news - my headache is gone! I woke up feeling so much better today. I am not sure if it was because I slept in an extra hour instead of working out or the fact that my little one had crawled into our bed at 5AM and was snuggling with me. Either way I woke up happy and pain free. e.  My workout plan today says 45 - 60 minutes of cardio and abs, I am not sure how I can fit this in. We are heading out of town tomorrow after work so we have to prep for that tonight, but maybe I can sneak off to the gym if we get done early.

Two Things

1. Went to bed early last night because I had a headache all day that just wouldn't go away. No workout last night because of it.

2. Woke up early this morning and did KenpoX, abs and push ups. My stomach has been hurting and the headache is coming back slowly! I think this is going to be a long day.

Case of the Monday's


This is me today! I feel like I could sleep another 10 hours. Yesterday we had a beautiful sunny day and today we woke up to gray and cloudy. The weather has such an impact on how I feel when I wake up. 

The plan for this week and the goal for this week is to control the sugar intake still as well as load up on water. We are heading to warmer weather for the 4th of July weekend and I want to make sure that I am completely hydrated to avoid the hot weather bloat.

As for the fitness goal I am going to keep it short and simple:

Monday  - 45 minutes cardio (whatever machine calls my name at the gym, I heave been wanting to try the Arc trainer so maybe that), abs, and final count on push up challenge
Tuesday - KenpoX
Wednesday - Yoga, 2-3 times up my hill
Thursday - 45 - 60 minutes cardio and abs
Friday - probably nothing unless I do it before work. After work we pack up and head out of town
Saturday - easy jog or walk for at least 30 minutes.

I plan to take my running stuff with me for our long weekend, but we will see how much I get in. I want to shoot for at least 30 minutes of some sort of workout. There is also a killer hill where we will be so maybe I will try to tackle that.

Five things

1. Today is our 7 year wedding anniversary. I have been married to the man I want to grow old with.  I love the movie the wedding singer and wanted to some how fit it into our vows but I couldn't get it to work out. I am a sap and actually get a little teary eyed when I watch this clip.



2. I attempted to get up and workout this morning, but my body just wouldn't do it. That could be because I was at the gym until 9:15 last night getting my workout on. I am not worried about missing the morning workout today is usually a rest day so if I don't get it in, no biggie, hopefully I will make it to spin class Saturday morning to offset the cake. :)

3.  The scale was up today, but I am ok with that as we had a wonderful weekend last weekend and I ate a lot. Then last night we went to Mexican food and I am sure the increase on the scale is due to my sodium intake last night.

4. I tried Chobani Greek Yogurt in Lemon flavor this morning and I all I can say is yummy!!!! I wish I had some blueberries to toss in and it would have made it a perfect breakfast. It may become my favorite flavor, which is currently held by blueberry.

5. Last but not least - I want to wish everyone running the Seattle RnR this weekend good luck! I hope the weather stays dry and you all have amazing runs.

Coffee, yes please

Sean was supposed to be home around midnight last night. At 8PM our time, he Facebooks me that his cell phone is dead and that he is stuck in Minnesota. His connecting flight to get home was delayed because of weather issues. The plane did finally arrive and he arrived home around 2:30AM, I vaguely remember the dogs barking and him crawling into bed. This morning the 5AM alarm was very annoying - I hit snooze, but then forced myself out of bed and headed to the garage.   As I walked in I told myself  just do 20 minutes - I started to warm up and couldn't get the TV to work. The TV was working I just couldn't get Netflix to work or even local channels to come up. I finally gave up and just ran a mile. After that I went outside for a short run around the neighborhood. The only problem with this is I live on a hill. I decided this morning I wasn't going to tackle the hill. Instead ran up and down the streets for about a mile and head back home to get ready for work.

While I was out I decided that my non weight related goal was going to tackle this hill. It is short but it is steep. I should get a photo of it, but here is the elevation chart from my garmin.


That is from my house to the half mile mark, makes for a nice start to any run, but a lousy ending. My summer goal is to be able to run the entire distance half mile.  I don't have an excuse to not be able to do it as its right outside my door and I can go train on it anytime I want.

Last night I picked up my first CSA order!!! I was so excited and so was my daughter, after opening up our box and cleaning all the fruit she immediately asked for an apple. Once she started eating it she looked at me and said "Mom, if I didn't have apples I would go crazy". Seriously so cute!  Here is a quick photo of what we received:

I am so excited for my lunch today. I used red lettuce, spinach, carrots and celery to make a tuna salad! Tossed two pieces of fruit into my bag to snack on during the day.  I originally set this up for every two weeks, but I am thinking I might switch it to weekly. The only thing I am not 100% sure what to use is the Kale.  I think I am going to try to make some Kale chips tonight, but what other things can I make with it?

Lastly today I wanted to say THANK YOU to my followers! Thank you for the positive comments. I have it set up so that I get emailed when I get a comment. I check my emails on my phone so its so nice to get motivation through out the day and not just when I am sitting in front of the computer. Excuses

A little over a week ago I did the Shore Run 5K and while I have wanted to I haven't run since. Life has just been getting in my way this month.  Today I looked up the race photo's and these two are the best of the few that were snapped of me. In the second one I actually think that both feet might be off the ground at the same time.

 


This week I had ever intention of running 3x after work, but then Monday we were surprised with a business trip for my husband. I skipped my run Monday to hang with him as he had to fly out early, like before the sun was up on Tuesday. Excuse #1!  I have a little mommy guilt about putting my little booger in the gym daycare after she has been in preschool all day while I work, so no running on Tuesday. Excuse #2! The hubs will fly home late tonight so no running tonight. Excuse #3! All I hear is excuses!

My goal is to get up in the morning and run before work since my hubs should be home and snoozing.   I wonder if my declaration to run in the AM will actually happen. I mean I declared Wednesday Yoga day and it hasn't happened YET- but I do have it planned to do Yoga tonight after I put the little one to bed.

In other fun news I pick up my first CSA box tonight! So excited. I also bought a Living Social deal for 20 Kickboxing Class for only $20 - the gym is really close to my house and for $20 I couldn't pass it up, now I just have to work it into my schedule.

Summmmmmmmmmmer

Yes, it is officially today is the first day of summer.  The beautiful glowing ball in the sky decided that it was going to shin on us today! It was a wonderful sight to see even if I was up at 5AM getting my work out on with P90X KenpoX.

Do you ever get race envy? I never thought I would but I am actually getting a little jealous of everyone who will be running the RnR in Seattle this weekend. Its crazy, even if I had a chance to run under someone else number I would not be ready for it, but I still kind of want to. Yesterday, I started looking at other half marathons in Seattle and stumbled on the Seattle Marathon, which also has a half.  The course looks nice and I ran a few miles of it on a 5K this month and really enjoyed the lake view.  I need to print out a calender and map out a training schedule to see if it will work for me or maybe I should just jump at it and sign up.

Excited for fruits and veggies

After many months or looking at and reviewing local CSA, I have signed up for CSA delivery from Full Circle. I selected Full Circle because of the flexibility of ordering and the ability to cancel or stop your order for one week if you are going to be out of town.

I pick up my first box at a local pick up, about 2 miles from my house on Wednesday and I can't wait. I looked up my order and this is what I am getting in my first box. My favorite part is if I don't like something in my box, I can sub something else at no charge. For example this week it said 1 bunch of beets. After looking online at what beets are and and how you would cook with them I decided to sub carrots in there place.

Celery, Organic - 1 each
Carrots, Organic - 1 bunch
Spinach, Organic - 1 bunch
Yellow Onions, Organic - 2 each
Avocados, Organic - 1 each
Green Beans, Organic - 0.75 pound
Mixed Baby Lettuce Heads, Organic - 3 each
Lacinato Kale, Organic - 1 bunch

I wish our state had more better priced farmers markets or fruit stands like I see in other states. It is really hard to support locally in this economy. I will take a photo of my box when I get it on Wednesday - I am excited.

Weekend Recap

Last weeks workout schedule was a bust and this weekend was anything but fitness related.  Sean and I celebrate our 7th Anniversary a few days early. We had a blast - starting with 24 hours kid free time, we started by checking into the Hyatt on Olive, love this hotel and spent some time doing a little shopping.  Part of our hotel package was a $50 gift card to Pacific Place, so we picked a restaurant in the mall and had dinner. I had a grilled chicken sandwich with avocado, which doesn't sound bad until I washed it down with two margaritas and garlic fries! Yum!  After dinner went back to the hotel to get ready for Mezzo Lunatico - it was a awesome variety show, with terrible food. The food wasn't horrible it was just really cold.  The show lasted until 1:30AM, I don't remember the last time I was up that late without a 3 year old waking me up. After the show we crashed and our 9AM wake up call came to soon.  Our kid free time ended with free breakfast at Urbane which was in our hotel.

Let's just say starting Friday night until Sunday afternoon every meal was in a restaurant of some sort. To say that I feel a little out of whack this morning would be an understatement. I look forwarding to adding better foods into my diet this week. My focus this week is to continue to watch my sugar intake and also get on the treadmill or go for a run outside.  After having a wonderful weekend and taking the photo above - I love the progress I have made, but look froward to reaching my goal this year.

Push Ups - Gggrrrrrrrr

Who cares if this baby looks better doing a push up then me. Last night headed to the gym and after 4 miles on the elliptical I did week 5 day 2 of the push up challenge. This week they had me do 185 push ups with 45 second break in between broken up into 7 sets.

Set 1 - 18 - knocked it out thought that was easy
Set  2- 18 - not so bad
Set 3 - 22 - really
Set 4 - 19 - oh 19 thank you for arriving before 20
Set 5 - 19 - arms starting to shake, lots of stretching afterwards
Set 6 - 22 - hmmmm hurting by number 15, sweating
Set 7 - 45 - WTF 45, paused at 20, paused at 35 and slowly completed the last 10 with lots of deep breathing and then crashed on the mat! Celebrated in my head....did I just do that. Did I just complete 45 at once.

I finished off the workout with some of my favorite ab work. It felt great to get a really good workout in! I left the gym feeling stronger then ever. I am actually getting excited to start this challenge over with real push ups instead of assisted.

I am beyond excited that it is Friday! We have a great weekend planned celebrating our 7th anniversary a little early - its on the 24th of June.  Not sure how much exercises I am going to get in but that is ok.

That's all I have


I have been slacking this week. I need to get our of my own way and stop making excuses. I  have not ran since Sunday. I want to, but then I find other things that need to get done and do them instead. Its like when you were in school and homework, you would do something else...like clean your room even though you hated cleaning your room. Cleaning your room was better then doing homework.   I am not going to declare that today is the day to do better because while that sounds great I don't see it happening.  Where is the reset button for this week or maybe we just need to fast forward to Friday.

Wednesday Yoga

This morning I was up at 5AM, downstairs working on my downward dog! Ahh Wednesday Yoga day was accomplished with no interruptions.  While I hate getting up to workout in the morning once the work out is done I feel stronger towards the day. After making a cup of coffee I headed back up stairs to wake the rest of the family and get ready for work.  I hope tonight to get some sort of run in, I have been slacking on my running plan this week. Must run, must run, must run!

I never understood way Whole Food's Parking lots are so small. Its one of those things that you look at when you drive up and go really? Really this all the parking you allotted for a grocery store, really?

Workout interrupted

I finally rolled my booty out of bed this morning to do Bob Harpers Cardio Conditioning before work. I looked at the back of the DVD lats night and I thought that I read that it was a 30 minute workout, but in reality it was an hour workout. I only had 45 minutes so I got started and figured I would get through as much as I could before I need to jump in the shower for work.  15 minutes into the workout I hear.....mommy, mommy is it morning time. Workout interrupted by a sleepy little one wanting to watch Sponge Bob at 5:30AM. After getting her situated I did some lunges, squats and started week 5 of the push up challenge.

The push up challenge was tough today. I was only able to complete 3 of the 5 sets before my arms started shaking like crazy. Today I did 30, 40 and 36 for a total of 106. I am going to take tomorrow off and hope I can knock out all 5 sets. Once I complete this I am going to start again but attempt to complete the challenge doing real push ups. I am feeling much stronger even if I have to do them assisted.

This morning before heading to work I had a dentist appointment. Oh the joy of going to the dentist. It was just for a cleaning, but we actually discussed getting a night guard to help with my grinding. A second option was to get invisiline on the bottom to help with one tooth that is going a little crazy. Awesome - because 4 years of braces as a kid wasn't enough.

My dentist is pretty cool though, they don't get on you for not flossing enough. Last time my husband went he suggested that they have Bacon Flavored Floss for the morning patients. When he told me this I wasn't sure if I was grossed out of if it was a good idea. Because you know everything is better with bacon.

This weeks Challenge

I tend to try to do much at once and then end up just doing an OK job at everything. This week I am going to try to do one thing GREAT!  My focus is cut out some SUGARS.  I know that I eat to much, I snack to much on a cookie here, a miniature chocolate here...and so on. 

As for exercise I am doing a modified version of the FIRST 10K program and I am trying to get to the gym for either SPIN or just using the exercise bike.  The Plan for this week - honestly
I might toss a rest day in there somewhere........just not sure where yet.

Monday - Key Run #1 for week 10 about 4.5 miles, finish week 4 of push up challenge
Tuesday - Bike, Abs and Start Week 5 of Push up Challenge
Wednesday - Key Run #2 - 5- 6 miles and Yoga in the AM
Thursday - Bike, Abs and Start Week 5 of Push up Challenge
Friday - Key Run #3 calls for 8  miles, I will probably modify to 6.2
Saturday - Spin Class

Sunday 5K

This morning my alarm went of at 6AM and I looked at it like - what is going on. As I slowly woke up I remembered that I had a 5K to head to. I was doing the Shore Run/Walk 5K and because it was a race that involved being shuttled to the starting line I wanted to get there early. It doesn't help that I am early to almost everything, so after toasting 2 Eggo's, and loading them with Justin's Chocolate Almond Butter I hit the road. The day was turning out to be beautiful and I was thinking I had overdressed, but I was just going with it.

After finding a place to park and walking towards the shuttle bus.

We were shuttled to the starting line that was right on the water, this boat in the marina caught my attention.  

This person had a rather interesting running outfit on. It looked like a possible Tri - suit, but it had the styling of Tron.  He also had a rather nice shaved hair and pony tail combo. I probably shouldn't point him out as I am pretty sure he kicked my ass in the race.
Once all of the 5Kers were in the area of the starting line, the announced that this was a Gun timed race and there was not timing mat at the start. I was bummed as I had placed myself in line where I thought I should be for my pace and that ended up being a big mistake. It took me almost a minute after the gun start to get to the starting line.
 The race was along the Lake Washington waterfront with an awesome view and beautiful homes to look at along the way. The sun came out and was bright and warm.  

According to the official time - I finished it in 39:41, but I remember looking down when I crossed the finish line and I was in the 38 range.  I am also proud to say that I didn't finish last in my age group which is always my goal.  After walking through the block party and grabbing a piece of cheese pizza I walked back to my car to change into my flip flops and inspect my toe that felt like it had blister on it. No blister but lots of blood - one of my toenails, was digging into my other toe and causing a mess.


Once I was cleaned up I head for home. As soon as I walked in the door my daughter reminded me that I promised to take her swimming at the gym after my race.

On a perfect Friday

Last night I knocked out week 4 day 2 of the push up challenge and while I am still doing assisted push ups when I was done with my sets of 25, 29, 25, 25 and 39 I felt strong. My arms were shaking and jello feeling but I felt strong. It was one of those workouts that builds confidence. Hopefully I can use that in my run tonight to push me through.  This weekend I have a 5K and all I can hope for is no rain.

Bloggers are invading my dreams

Last night I had a visit with 3 blogger's in my dreams of course, I mean really I dreamt about them. Kind of freaky or it means that I read to many blogs.

First was Jess @ Blond Ponytail I was at my house and looked out the front door and saw her playing with her dog. I thought of that is strange, my husband said she is the new neighbor and lives two doors down. Which I thought was strange also because people live in that house. Then I said should go out and introduce myself since I blog stalk all the time and take my dogs. My husband said her dog will use our dogs as a chew toy.

Here are my dogs. Bleu is a 4lb Pomeranian and Maggie is a 12lb Pekingese. They both just received their summer haircuts. For what its worth I don't think her dog would eat my dogs.


The second person to visit me in my sleep was Rose she was trying to teach me how to jump and take a photo. I think this was because yesterday I was looking at the Levitating Photographer yesterday.  The dream was Rose and I out in front of my house jumping around like fools and cracking  up the entire time as each of us fell to the ground.

The third person to invade my dream was Kim and we were having a debate about compression socks. I can only imagine that was because I wore my first pair yesterday. Her visit was short because my alarm started going off.

Thighs that eat shorts

Yup that is what I have!  It was worth a try, by mile 2.5 I decided to just run in my underwear. I am thankful that I had some underwear on tonight as I usually run commando. This was the moment that I was glad that I was at home. The shorts might work as a layer for spin class.

Here is my pre workout photo - new top from Target - which totally rocks because its looser fitting and doesn't ride up! Love must go get more of these. Clearance running shorts and my brand new RunLove Compression Socks which just arrived today.  Sean asked me several times if he was sure I wanted my photo taken and I said yes! Maybe he was right I should have kept this one to myself. :)

Now that is motivation! Last night I wasn't able to make it to the gym, by the time I had a free minute to go it was 9PM, and well I like to relax a little when I am done working out before going to bed. Instead I completed week 4 day 1 of the push up challenge....yea it was tough and then tossed in some ab work and called it a night.

This morning the snooze button and I were at war. I finally got out of bed with 30 minutes to do some yoga, 15 minutes into it I wished I crawled out of bed earlier so that I could have completed and hour of it. It felt so good! I think I am going to officially make Wednesday yoga morning - of course we have to wait until next week to see if it will really happen.  

Last night I also made a trip to Target, probably the reason I never made it to the gym. I think I need to be supervised when sent into a store like Target. I came out with a new top which I love and wore this morning for yoga, but I can't seem to find it on their website to share with you. The most surprising purchase was a pair of running shorts! My garage is to hot in the summer and running in capri's is killing me and I only have one running skirt, so I picked up a pair of clearance running shorts. These will only be worn in the privacy of my home or over capris - but first I need to test them and make sure my thighs don't get hungry and eat them up while I run.

I heart BBQ

After years and years of looking at BBQ, Sean and I finally purchased one this weekend. Its only taken 7 years of living in our house and talking about it to pull the trigger. Really Sean was the one that did it. He even spent Sunday putting it together.  Sunday night we had skirt steak and roasted asparagus and it was delicious. I think I could eat roasted veggies nightly.

Last night he asked what we had to BBQ and since I hadn't made it to the store yet for the week the options were slim but yummy. I had frozen mahi mahi and roasted asparagus. Sean and Evie had some nasty dogs, better known as hot dogs. Now I am not one to knock the hot dog, but I can only consume so many in a week and we had them on Saturday at the beach.  I look forward to make more AMAZING meals on the BBQ this summer.

I need to figure out the logistics but I so want to try Pizza on the barbie thanks to Rose.

4 x 800 = tough

Inside Out Method - Complete CollectionTonight I had a 5 x 800 planned. Well I accomplished 4 x 800 it is so humid here and my garage felt like 500 degrees. My target pace for the 800M was 6:01, since I was running on the treadmill it was easy to force myself to reach my pace. My pace were 6:00, 5:56, 5:58 and 5:58 after the last 800 I did my cool down and called it a day.

I am actually excited for my morning workouts this week. I ordered new DVDs and they came in the mail today. I got the complete Bob Harper Inside Out Method. I figured I need something else besides Jillian Michael's or Tony Horton yelling at me in the AM.  I am not sure which one I am going to start with tomorrow but I will let you know how I like his workouts.

I wish we had a 4 day work week

Of course who doesn't want more time to play. The weather showed me some love this weekend - and we spent all of Saturday at the lake.  We were on the lake by 9:30AM and enjoyed a beautiful day.   I learned that running gear is the best swim suit cover ups! I sported my running visor, running skirt and a tank I use frequently to workout in all over my swimsuit.  My husband said I looked like I was ready to go for a run. While that wasn't my plan, it worked out great when I stepped off our Seadoo in water up to my waist and was wet. In normal swim cover ups it would have taken forever for the cotton to dry out. I was comfortable in dry in a matter of minutes thanks to my running skirt.
Last week wasn't a great come back to fitness as I wanted.  This week it will be better. The plan for the week is:

Sunday - Rest - well unless you count washing two cars and random house cleaning
Monday -  Run - 5 x 800 w/400 RI
Tuesday  - Stationary Bike
Wednesday -  Run - 1M warm up, 2M@ Short Tempo, 1M easy, 2M@Short Tempo, 1M cool down
Thursday -  Spin Class if I can make it our just my own bike workout
Friday -  7 miles @ long tempo Pace
Saturday -  Spin class or rest day

My goal is to get up 30 minutes before work and do some sort of DVD or cross training to not only wake me up, but to fit it all in. This morning I couldn't get my DVD to work so I made up my own workout. It consisted of:

Push Up Challenge Week 3 Day 3
Walking Lunges
Squats
Arm Curls
Kickbacks
Abs

Any advice for someone who is having a hard to jumping back into a training schedule? I need to get focused this week as I have a 5K this weekend and I really want to do well.

Happy Friday

I am so happy it is Friday, I am even happier that the Sun is out in Washington!  The only problem with the Sun, is that my training schedule will suffer on the weekends. Honestly for what little sun we get year round I can live with it. 

Yesterday  I completed two workouts.  My A M workout was my second date with Jillian and Level 1 of 30 Day Shred. My PM workout was 10  miles at the gym on the bike along with week 3 day 2 of push ups. At the Gym I was watching SNL the Best of Amy Poehler  and I was just cracking up, especially when they ended the show with the Palin Rap from the election - I forgot how funny that was.  I was having a hard time containing my laughter.



Today I have a 5 mile run planned for after work we will see if that happens. It may happen later in the evening as with the Sun out I am going to want to play. Plus we are going to the Lake tomorrow so we need to prepare for that! Oh Sunshine how I love thee. Summer, in Washington is my favorite time of year providing the sun shines.

Hello 5AM and a Winner

Good morning, its not often that I am up this early but for the month of June I am recommitting to getting up and working out before work. This morning I had a date with Level 1 of Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred and week 3 day 1 of the push up challenge. And since its National Running Day - I do have plans to get an interval run in tonight.  The plan:
  • 10-20 minute warm up
  • 8 x400 w/400 Rest Intervals
  • 10 minute cool down
  • Total distance 4+ miles depending on how long I do a warm and cool down for.
