HM Week #3

Yesterday started week 3 of my half marathon training. I go between excitement and what the hell did I sign myself up for thinking regularly. :)  If I just stick to the running plan and add some cross training days in I know I can do this.

The plan for this week:
Sunday -  7 Miles (Done 1:27:19 - 12:16 pace)
Monday - 40 minutes elliptical, abs, lunges, push ups
Tuesday - 4 Miles and  P90X Arms and Shoulders (maybe)
Wednesday - Yoga
Thursday - 5 Miles (after 2 miles, run 4 x 2 minutes tempos)
Friday - 40 minutes elliptical and Leg workout
Saturday - Rest

This week goals:
1. Get all of my planned workouts in
2. Track all of my food intake
3. Eat well Saturday since I have 7 miles on Sunday to tackle

Weekend Update

Saturday was a day of rest and I took that day.

Sunday today the plan was I would head to they gym at 10AM and then Sean would bring Evie down at 11:30 and I would take her swimming while Sean ran his mileage for today. The plan worked out perfect, except I am exhausted now. My overall run was okay, I did do a little bit of walking, trying to keep my pace the entire run was difficult, but the walk breaks helped.

4 Miler

Friday I had a headache most of the day at work. I was going to skip my 4 mile treadmill run, but I really need to get it in since I had already skipped it on Thursday. After work I headed to to they Gym, they were playing the Fantastic Four in the Cardio Cinema, so I decided that is where I would run. Once I was dressed and on the treadmill I figured if I felt bad already then I might as well just try to knock out the run as fast as I could.

I set the treadmill at 5pmh and just started running. Surprisingly I was able to hold this pace for the entire 4 miles. I did grab on to the rails a couple of times when my head was pounding, but as soon as I did I heard Jillian Michael's screaming in my head "Let go of the handrail". :)  It felt good to get the 4 miles done and it was also encouraging that I can ran a 12 minute mile, now to set a new goal of 11:30 minute mile and work towards that goal.

Weekly Weigh In

Quick and simple weigh in today. My scale has me down 1lb. I will take it. It is nice to each pound coming off, even if it is at a slower rate then I want.

I do expect this to be a slow process as I have already lost the baby weight, I am below my wedding weight - and the rest of this, well its just my stupid years of getting fat weight. Between the time I graduated highschool, 1996, and the year I got married 2004 - there was a 75lb down difference. How I gained all of that I don't know.  My ultimate goal weight will put me in the range I was in highschool - at my smallest I was 130lbs, but that was right after my car accident so I am not shooting for that. My normal weight was around 160lbs. My ultimate goal weight is 164, which is still more then my husband - but I can accept that.

Snow day

Wednesday there was a threat of a snow storm in the Pacific Northwest. Having lived in Washington most of my life I have quickly learned that the weather people are not always right, although they are getting better. Typically they are a bit off. While at work it would start snowing, then the sun would come out, rinse and repeat.  My husband called and asked if I could pick up our daughter from daycare as he was going to be working late.  After picking her up we had a few errands then home for dinner and off to our annual homeowners meeting. Taking a toddler to a homeowners meeting is fun!  But you have to do what you have to do. By the time we got home it was 9PM and it was snowing out. Evie and I laid in my bed watching the snow come down waiting for Sean to get home. I really love just watching it snow there is something so relaxing about that. Basically with everything I need to get done a workout didn't happen Wednesday.

Thursday I woke up to  the sounds of the snow plow outside my window. While I am grateful they were plowing our driveways, I was not pleased that it was 5AM. I decide that the roads looked clear enough to head into work.  Sean worked from home with Evie, which can be stressful so I left for the day at lunch. This would give him a chance to attend meetings from home without the worry of Evie screaming in the background.  The plan for today was 4 miles, with the snow that meant the treadmill. With Sean having to work tonight and the daycare closed at the gym - I decided to do a P90X workout at home while attempting to get Evie to nap.   With the first workout done, I still need to get some more cardio in so I think I will have to rely on my old standby of stepping while watching shows tonight. Hopefully I can get Evs down for an early bedtime.

Tuesday Recap

Today the treadmill run felt better then last week.

I did hill intervals:
  • Flat at 4.8mph
  • 3% incline at 4.4mph
  • 4.3 miles with warm up and cool down
The one good thing about doing a workout at the gym......full cable. We only have the basic channels at home and use Netflix and online streaming. When I am at the gym I get to watch lots of random shows that I never get to see. Does entertainment of choice was Real Housewives of Orange County. Oh man some of those ladies are hot messes.

I just had to say it! I feel like I never win anything, but this time I am the winner! I was notified today by Heather from Will Run For Coffee  that I won her blog contest.

What did I win you might ask, I won an Active Wrap like this one.  I have already received confirmation from the Active Wrap rep that it should arrive in the next couple of weeks. Which makes me one happy campier since over the next couple of week I have 2 - 7 mile runs planned and come April 3rd, I have my first double digit run - 10 miles.....eeek! I have feeling that I am going to need this after some of my longer runs.

Here we go again

This week has already started out well. I got my 6 mile run in yesterday and woke up this morning to just a little pain in my knee. Totally manageable and with no running today I think it should be back to normal by tomorrow.

The plan for this week has been reworked. I have decided on Run days, I will not do double workouts. On cross train days, I will go for double workouts if my schedule and body permits.


Only one thing plagues me this week, I need to go donate blood. I feel that it is important to donate blood if you have the ability to. I am O-, which is the universal blood type, however I can only accept O- blood. When I was 18, I was in a really bad car accident and airlifted to Harberview Medical Center in Seattle, my injuries were life threatening. Because I was bleeding internally I was given more blood then your body needs in order for them to stop the bleeding. I had my spleen removed, liver repaired and pelvic bone set and in the end, came out of it alive, with several battle scars and the ability to still have children even though my pelvic bone was broken in 6 places.  So you can see why I believe that it is important to donate blood. Without the current technologies I don't believe I would be alive today.

My problem is lately every time I go to donate blood, my iron levels are to low.  I have been trying to eat more iron rich foods but so far that has not been helping. Even if I can get my iron levels up I need to figure out which day to go donate blood. You are not supposed to workout for 12 hours after you donate, and I don't think I could anyways it usually wipes me out. I am thinking, if I can get up and run early Tuesday, that I could try to donate blood after work that day. Giving me plenty of time to recover before my next run.

Weekend Update

Friday didn't go as planned. Sean called and asked if I could pick up our daughter Evie from daycare so he could work late. That wouldn't be a problem, I figured I could just run the 4 miles after we put her to bed that night.  After I picked her up he asked if we wanted to meet for dinner. Of course I said yes, who wants to cook on a Friday night, plus where we were meeting would allow me to stop at a shoes store and pick up a new pair of Balega socks and some jelly beans for my 6 mile run planned on Sunday.  However after dinner, and getting home there would be no running.

Saturday was supposed to be my rest day, but I still need to get the 4 miles in. I decided to break it into 2 - 2 mile segments. 2 miles to our local park and 2 miles back. I loaded Evie into the BOB jogging stroller and off we went. We haven't really used the stroller for a while, and sadly I think she is getting to big for it and heavy to push. It took me longer then I wanted to run the 2 miles there, but I did have a few stops crossing the streets and avoiding traffic. The ride home was a bit smoother until we go to our hill, which is the last .25 miles to my house. How don't care how great the jogging stroller is, pushing a 34lb toddler up a step hill in it is tough!

Sunday my husband and I ran 6.1 miles in 78 minutes. He did the honor of pushing Evie in the stroller, while I shuffled behind him. His jogging pace is definitely faster then my pace, by he played it off as he was able to do intervals work because he was waiting for me. I didn't feel bad, I know he is faster then me and I am just glad that I was able to complete the distance. We took one break half way to eat some jelly beans and I drank most of a FRS. It was an out and back run, so the run back actually felt good as I passed my landmarks that I used as bargaining points on the way out.  After the run, Sean said he was starving and wanted a McDonald's Double Cheeseburger, hold the cheese. I skipped McDonald's and came home and had a protein drink.   Things I learned from this run:
  • I need to work on taking longer strides
  • My left leg is weaker then my right 
  • I can complete this half marathon. Some how completing almost half in week 2 of training, makes the whole thing possible.
  • My bodybugg will most likely cause some chaffing if I go farther wearing it
  • oh and I burned 1201 calories between 2PM -3:30PM according to the bodybugg

Not a fan of race photo's

Especially when the picture you had in your head of how you looked does not equal the photo end results.  I new going into the event that I wasn't going to look my best, heck I still have a lot of weight to lose. Regardless I was excited. This was my first event by myself, I had my new bondiband on which did give me a chuckle through the race, my race shirt was too big which made me happy, I had great tunes playing and was ready to rock it. Well rock it in my terms - run the whole race with no walking. Which I did.  I felt happy afterwards, I felt like I had accomplished something. The one thing I was missing was the race photo. I had some less then stellar race photos in the past, but this one just reminded me that I still have a long journey. As I sit here picking my photo apart I am having an internal struggle with talking negative about myself and using this for motivation. I am really trying to be more positive about my weight loss journey, but it is getting harder the longer I am at it. In the theory of banning negative talk - I keep telling myself: Think how great you are going to look at your St. Paddy's Day Dash, you have a month to make the next photo AWESOME! Note to self - don't wear the to x-large race shirt next time.


WWI

No I don't mean World War 1, I mean Weekly Weight In! Although my battle with the scale feels like a war on a daily basis. This week I was terrified of the scale, because on Monday when I stepped on it for a check it said I was up 9lbs. You know how many calories I would of had to consume over the weekend to gain 9lbs. If 1lb equals 3500 calories that would be 31,500 over 3 days. Ummm that was not happening through out the week I watched the number drop, but was worried yesterday when I was back at last weeks weight. As of this morning I am down 1 more lb! I will take it.

oh Wednesday

I think I need to stop watching Biggest Loser live and start getting in bed on Tuesday night before 10PM. I have noticed that past few weeks that I stayed up to watch the end of Biggest Loser once I got to bed I am not tired. This causes me to get terrible sleep, and miss my planned Wednesday morning Yoga session. Then my day just feels off. 

Today I got my 4 mile planned run in on the treadmill in 56 minutes. I did a walk/run combo as I kept getting a cramp in my upper left thigh. I need to stretch better before my run next time.  I was going to make up my missed Yoga session tonight, but I checked my bodybugg and I have already met my burned calories for the day met, so I am going to skip it.

Instead I can't wait to dig into the book I picked up from the library - Run Like a Mother. I have read great reviews on it and as a mother I struggle with spending time with my beautiful daughter and wonderful husband or carving out time for myself.  I received a Nook for Christmas and was sad when my library did not carry this book in the digital format, I quickly feel in love with reading in the digital format. Since the library didn't carry a digital copy I got on the list for the paperback. Having to wait for a book is always a good sign that it is a good read.

Already feeling like a slacker

This week has started off slowly for me.

Monday - Goal 4 miles, accomplished 3.5. I accidentally reset the treadmill and by the time it finished cycling through workout complete data I had lost my motivation. Plus for some reason it felt like 100 degrees in the gym.  I did get another chance to try my Lululemon  Run: Zoom Crop pants I got last week and well I am in love! Once I realized  there was a draw string and cinched them in I was golden.

The plan for Tonight - Heading to they gym after work, I am thinking 45 minutes on the elliptical and some ab work.  Then tonight during the Biggest Loser to keep my hands and from wanting to binge eat I am going to do a P90X video.  Anyone else have the urge to eat while watching the Biggest Loser. I swear every week its a fight not to eat everything in the house.

Lastly head over to Will Run for Coffee and check out her blog contest for an Active Wrap.  I found her blog when trying to think of a name for my blog. Will Run for Coffee was the first thing that came to mind. I heart coffee, really I heart a Grande Skinny Carmel Latte extra hot please. I started following her blog and today she posted this great giveaway. I just checked out the Active Wrap website and wish something like this had been around in when I was in high school when I was plagued with ankle injuries.

A new week

I decided to give myself a rest day yesterday. Sometimes I tend to overwhelm myself with schedule and planning and everything comes crashing down. The extra rest day was really needed and I look forward to working out today, instead of dreading it. 

Here is my schedule for the week, I am not looking forward to the Chest, Shoulders and Triceps workout tomorrow as last week I was hurting for days. Hopefully this week will go smoother.

eek....half training schedule

Its official, this weeks is our first week of half marathon training. Since my husband will be training also I wrote out our schedule in "jen speak" on the whiteboard by our treadmill. I also have it on my phone for quick reference. I am going to try get run 2 runs outside, where I am sure my husband will run most of his runs on the treadmill. His schedule does not have the extra flexibility that mine does to get runs outside until it begins to stay lighter longer in the evenings. I want to try to do our long runs together on Sunday, but we will see how it goes.


Running Skirts

This weekend at my run, there were so many women in running skirts and I loved them.

There was a booth from Runner Skirts and it was a good thing that I didn't bring any money or I might have picked one up. They are officially on my wish list of must have items. I love the Capri style and the Chocofleurs  color.

The race results are in

Today I participated in the Love'em and Leave'em Valentines Day 5K around GreenLake. The forecast was predicting rain. Thankfully the rain held off but it was still cold out. The thing about running around a lake even a small one, is it is a bi-polar experience. The first part was cold, then the sun came out and it was comfortable, then you round another part and the wind is blowing and it is cold again! Either way I did it, I ran the entire thing with an Official Time of 39:04 and Average Pace of 12:36. I am actually really happy that I completed the race.

Packet Pickup

My husband was wonderful enough to pick up my packet for tomorrow's race while he was in the city today. He picked up my shirt size XL, typically what I wear for races.  This time the shirt was a little large.  Now I just need to get everything ready for tomorrow. I also received two Bondi Bands that I ordered from Amy  for her TNT fundraising, hopefully the rain holds off and I can wear one of them tomorrow.

Should I expect anything less

I just checked the weather report for my 5K planned for tomorrow - Love'em and Leave'em Valentines Day Dash - and well should I expect anything less from the Pacific Northwest.  Not sure if you can read it but at race time it will feel like 40 degree's with an 80% chance of precipitation.


I was really hoping the past few days of cold, but sunny weather would stay at least until after the run.  However know I can handle it as I survived the downpour of the St. Patrick's Run of 2009. When Sean, Evie and I arrived at the event it was snowing, yes snowing in March. By the time the run ended it was raining and we were soaked.

Weekly Weigh In

Well I acutally weighed in yesterday, but I was the same today so I am going with it. This week I was down 1.2lbs from last week. I am now in the dreaded zone....the zone that has plagued me for the past year. I lose the weight I gain it back, to only lose it again and gain it back. I am so determined this time to lose it and not gain it back. So far in 2011 I have lost 6lbs, for a total of  79lbs lost since my daughter was born in 2007, one thing for sure, I may be slow at losing weight but at least I am losing while most of the world is gaining.

4 mile run = fail

I just completed a crappy run and I know days like this are going to happen, but that self doubt really starts to creep in when you don't reach your goal. I mapped out a new run that was 4 miles, it had a few hills in it, had a nice view and I figured I could knock it out with little problem, since I did 3.8 last week. Well things did not go as planned.

Problem #1 - The start of my run was through the State Park. What I did not realize was that they are doing a Park Restoration, which means the nice trail is marked with tractor divots and wet spots from the recent rain. This made for a interesting first mile trying to find the right place to run without rolling my ankle.

Problem #2  - This was my first real outdoor hill run. I tried my best to push through the hills, thankfully they were short and there was small flat area's before the next incline. I ran up the hills, then walked briefly before taking off again for the next hill.

Problem #3 - Self doubt crept into my brain around mile 3, I just couldn't give over my own belief that I was going to fail and ended up walking the rest. My mind was at war with itself. On part was saying....just because you have all the gear, does not make you a runner. Then I would remind myself how far I have come and encourage myself and then the doubt would come back in.

All in all I did 4.4 miles in an 1 hour - not the best, but way better then where I started. I need to be proud of my accomplishments and move forward.

On another note I am fed up with this Nike+, I was given a brand new sensor for my shoe and it still becomes undetected shortly after starting. I am going to try one more troubleshooting method and then I think I will toss it. Today I downloaded the iMapmyrun ap for my blackberry and used it  and that worked out great, so at least I have a back up plan for now.

When you have a little one

When you have a little one your plans never stay the same. The goal yesterday was to run 4 miles outside after work then do YogaX before bed. Around noon yesterday I received a call from my daycare provider letting me know that my daughter had just vomited. She was acting fine and felling ok, but I felt I should go get her in case it turned into something else.  Once we were home she was acting normal, but I figured I should make her relax just in case she was fighting a bug. I turned on Princess and the Frog for her and Yoga X for me. One part of my goal was done. At bedtime, I had my husband put her to bed so I could jump on the treadmill for 30 minutes. I did a hill course, to prepare for my St. Patricks Day run.

Today's Plan - 4 Miles outside and Legs, Back and Ab Ripper X tonight after the little one is in bed.

Realistically my goal is to just complete the 4 miles to the best of my ability. I start official half marathon training next week and all 3 runs on my schedule are 4 miles, so I figure if I can knock one out this week I will be better off come next week.

Not so terrible Tuesday

The Plan - P90X - Chest, Shoulders and Triceps and Ab Ripper X  as well as get in a 4 mile run.

The Accomplishments - 3 mile tempo run and ab work at the gym and then tonight P90X - Chest, Shoulders and Triceps.

While it didn't go exactly as planned I am happy with what I accomplished. Today was my first attempt at a tempo run. I did a .25 mile warm up then alternated speeds each .25 of a mile. For the first time in a long time I ran at 6mph on the treadmill. While that is not much for most, that is a lot for me and I look forward to running longer at that speed.

I just entered my calories for the day and with the 100 I have left, I think I will have 2 small pieces of chocolate as my reward. Last week I started using 2 pieces of good chocolate at the end of the day as my reward. It helps me to resist the temptations through out the day with the promise of chocolate at night.

Here we go again

My week officially started on Sunday, but often Monday feels like the start of a new week. That could be because its when the alarm clock starts going off ridiculously early in the morning.

This week has started off well, Sunday both workouts were completed. Monday morning P90X was completed and for this afternoon all I need to do is get in some cardio. With plans to hit the gym after work that should be easy enough.

Here is my plan for the week. Green workouts completed. Saturday I have a Valentines day 5K which should be fun and I am looking forward to.


Goals for the week:1. Track all food
2. Get all runs in
3. Cross the finish line on the 5K

Weekend Update

Saturday was my day of rest and I rested. We had a baby shower to attend a couple of hours away from our house, so it was a good day to have a rest day. I didn't do so well on my eating, but I am going to leave that in the past and move forward. One bonus of Saturday, well besides seeing my friends new baby boy was stopping at the LuluLemon Outlet on the way home. I was looking for a pair or running pants and ended up picking up the Run: Zoom Crop.

Sunday, I woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Thankfully my husband offered to go grocery shopping for me which allowed me to run while he was gone. I got 3.25 miles in and I have to say it is true when they say running is cheaper then therapy. I wore my new pants on my run, and I have to say that right now I am not impressed.....well actually I really like them except for one thing......the don't stay up on my bum. I am not sure if I got the wrong size but the just kept sliding down. Since I got them out the outlet there are no returns so I will have to make them work. After skipping watching the Super Bowl and instead watching Toy Story 3 with the family I completed my P90X workout for the day.

Hello Friday!

Its one of those days where you wake up and just feel good. Even though I wasn't in bed until shortly after 11PM, when the alarm went off at 4:30AM I was able to crawl out of bed shortly before 5 to workout. On the schedule today was P90X Core Synergistics - this is one of my favorite workouts. I find it challenging enough to keep me interested for the full hour. There are some moves that are just a little crazy and because of my hardwood floors I have to skip. One of those is the Dreya Roll - well the video I found has the girl doing it on wood floors, but I find it painful. I also dream of the day that I am fit enough to do the plank run to chataranga run, for now I just do the plank run. I just don't have the upper arm strength to get down into the chataranga pose.

After my workout I made a protein shake using So Delicious Vanilla Coconut Milk and Jillian Michael's Chocolate Protein Powder and all I can say is yummy. I think is this is my new favorite quick protein drink. This is my first week trying Coconut milk, but I think I am in love. It is tasty on cereal and made the protein drink super creamy.

My plan for this evening is to get a light 30 minute run in on the treadmill and then relax. This morning was my weekly weigh in day, well my offical day I have to say I am a little obsessed with the scale and typical step on it more then one time in a day. Unless I hide it....then I may go a whole day with out using it before I bring it back out. This morning I am happy to say that I am down 2.8lbs, which is good becuase I was up last week. So I lost the gain from last week plus a little more. I am focused and ready to see that scale move down and eventually have me enter ONEderland. My goal for next week is 2lbs, which is tough but if I stay on track I know I can do it.

Making deals

Ever start out a run making deals with yourself.....if you make it to that tree, you can walk. The beauty of this is when you get to the tree you pick another location as your deal spot. I did this my entire 3.7 mile run today. I am actually very proud that I was able to accomplish run with only stopping 2x, once to take a photo and the other time to check my distance on my Nike+ which was a good thing as it died a mile later. I am waiting for my replacement in the mail.


My running music today was Eminem's Recovery Album - which I enjoyed as it keep my energy levels up. Nothing like a little bit of angry music to keep you moving, but with the view above most of the run there was no way I could be angry. Today it was cold, yet beautiful out. My car said 45 degrees when I finished my run around 5PM, so not cold compared to back East, but cold enough that I was glad I had a long sleeve coat on. On my short drive home from my run location the skies were beautiful.


My plan was to do Yoga tonight after I put the little one to bed, however I am tired and heading to bed early.

Change of plans

Instead of heading out for a run after work I went home and spent some time with my family. I already got my morning P90X KenpoX workout in this morning so I am covered there. Instead of running tonight I will free step while watching the Biggest Loser and then tomorrow hit the trail for 3.5 miles. Sounds simple enough. Although I will say the weather looks beautiful to run today, I hope it holds for tomorrow.
