Eating for your lifestyle

Yesterday, I posted a day in my life of trying to eat healthy. Several people commented that I eat healthy. The truth is that is just one snapshot of a week. Yes, that day I was on the ball and knocked out awesome meals all day, but that doesn't always happen. For me it is a constant struggle and I know it will be.  I have weakness's, while I was eating my salad at Subway I was dreaming of the cupcakes at the Cupcake Store that was next store.

I posted about my weight loss  and was asked besides running how did I lose the weight? I wanted to take some time to respond to that. I don't think I lost weight from running, however it did help to shape my body differently and the food I choose while training do help me lose weight.  When I am training I try to focus on what I eat more to fuel my longer runs, as its hard enough for me already without hitting a major wall from not eating properly.

So how did I get started on my weight loss journey. I feel like I have been up and down over the years, but really my 'I gotta change moment' happened when I went to my one year check up after my daughter was born and I was up to 263lbs.  6 weeks after she was born I had lost all the baby weight and was at 250lbs. I had gained weight! It was time to come to the realization that I need to make some changes. I had a one year old daughter to think about.

I went straight from that appointment to the gym and signed up for trainer sessions.  Yes, I had a gym membership and heck I even went but my workouts were weak and sporadic. By the end of 2008 I had lost a few pounds and even signed up for my first race. Which was more of a walk but it was a start. In 2009 I received a BodyBugg as a birthday present. It was a blessing! It really helped me see that I was phoning it in at the gym and that I needed to take control of my calories.  For me eating is 75% of my weight loss and working out is 25%, if I don't keep my eating in check I don't lose weight.  I continued to use the BodyBugg until this summer when I decided I didn't want a tan line from it and to go at it on my own.

The problem is when I don't follow a structured program I bounce around, try different eating plans and pretty much stay the same in my weight loss. In October I decided to go back to low carb, cleaner eating to help me reach my next milestone. I like this method as I can try to eat as little processed foods as I can which makes me think about my food choices instead of just grabbing 100 calorie pack of something. It has been difficult and I have had slip up days but for the most part it has helped me stay on track. It introduced me to new vegetables and combinations of foods.

I believe that everyone has different ways of eating and it is important to find what works for you. I have 22lbs to lose to get to where I will be happy, but in the back of my mind I am shooting for another 47lbs (155lbs safely in the Normal BMI range) - you know that dream weight. We shall see where this journey takes me.

Thanks to everyone who reads and makes comments on my blog. I really enjoy reading them as track my journey. The feedback is awesome and I try to respond to questions asked if I can, maybe someday I will have a nifty comments section that I can actually reply to you in the comments section, but for now this works.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  1. I like how you broke it down, wasn't anything drastic, just healthy choices over time. Im also glad you mentioned the 100 calorie packs. Most people just assume bc its only 100 calories, that its a great choice. We forget its still processed.

In regards to responding to comments... what has really helped me is I get an email notification to my gmail every time someone leaves a comment on my blog. When I go to the email, IF the person has set up their email option, I can reply directly to them and it sends them an email. Unfortunately there are a lot of people who still show up as noreply@blogger.com, so you can't email them back. I'm hoping more people catch on to make their email accessible because it really improves the whole blogging community.
If you have NO IDEA what i'm talking about, let me know and I can walk you through it

  2. I added something to eblogger to enable reply to comments on the blog but now can't remember how I did it.
