Seattle Half Marathon Recap

Last week I was worried about the weather being cold and raining. Then Friday and Saturday turned out a beautiful day, cold but sunny. The report had said both days were supposed to be cold and raining..........I hoped and dreamed that maybe Sunday would also be  nice.

When I woke up at 5:30AM I looked outside and there was no rain. Hip pain was at a 5 on a scale of 1-10. I debated on going and told myself to just get out there and do the best I can. I stopped at Starbucks for a coffee and snacked on a PB&J  as I drove into the city. My car said it was 51 degrees. I started wondering if I was over dressed. I decided to stick with  my original plan and if I got hot take off my jacket.

Just as the half marathoner's were lining up it started to rain.  By the end of mile 2, I was thankful I stuck to my original plan. The wind was pushing the rain sideways and having the extra protection helped.  One of my goals this race besides to get across the finish line in as little pain as possible was to not be lapped by any of the marathoners. We started 30 minutes before them, but were on the same course until about mile 4. Since I am not that fast of a person there is a chance this could happen. I am thankful that the only person who lapped me was one wheelchair participant. Of course he did pass me twice - clearly he was rocking it out.
I actually enjoyed the course, while it was hilly there was enough flat areas to help even it out. I didn't check my Garmin most of the race as I was just trying to get it completed. The first time I checked it - it said 2:33, I made a note that if I picked it up a little I could come in under 3 hours which was one of my first goals before I started getting hurt.  Through out the race my hip went from a pain level of 5 to about 10 at times. I had to actually keep my hand on my hip to keep it from popping out of place during many portions of this race.
Overall I finished in 2:57:30, which I am happy about it. Its a 7 minute PR on my last half, I will take that improvement.  Since it was raining the entire time I only have one photo to share.  I don't even have a photo of my entire outfit. At first the sparkle skirt got strange looks, but after a few miles the compliments started coming.  The spectators were great even in the pouring rain and the sparkly skirt helped get lots of encouragement from random strangers.

So what's up next for me, for now it is to figure out this hip issue. I suppose I need to visit a doctor and figure out what is going on. I am pretty sure grinding and clicking most of the 13.1 miles was not good for it. For now I see Spin Class in my future.

How was your long weekend? Now that Thanksgiving is over any races planned for December?

The thought of doing it with the hip pain makes me kind of cringe....but you did it!!

I am taking it easy for a week to see if my knee pain lessens...with ice and IBU I think it will.

    Again congrats!
