Happy Halloween

I hope everyone has a wonderful Halloween. Now lets talk about my hip - that is one scary story. I am sure I have touched on this before but I was in a car accident when I was 18. One of the results of this was the following - Preoperative Diagnoses: Unstable pelvis fracture consisting of right-sided sacral fracture, left-sided sacroiliac joint disruption, bilateral communited public rami fractures and left sided soft tissue flank degloving injury. In average person speak I broke my pelvic one in 6 places.  After a few other surgeries were performed 3 days after my accident the wonderful surgeons were able to go in and piece me back together. With the use of two screws and an external fixture that would leave me on bed rest for 6 weeks while it healed.

Over the years I have had extreme lower back pain due to this injury and gaining weight. Through weight loss and many visits to the chiropractor I am now relatively pain free. Except when I have a flair up! My hip issue is a flair up in my mind, as it is in the lower left back side of my hip. My plan to continue to prepare for my half is to visit the chiropractor and stretch.

The plan this week:
Monday - Spin Done
Tuesday - 4 miles
Wednesday - Spin
Thrust - 4 miles
Friday - 4 miles
Saturday - Spin or Rest
Sunday - 5 miles (what...that seems low just 4 weeks out from my half, but I have had 2 - 10+ miles and then I have an 11 and 12 mile after that so maybe it is good, let my hip rest a little)

And because she is just so cute, my daughter dressed up for Halloween. She was Rapunzel after she had her hair cut and realized she was the princess.

Any plans for Halloween? Did you celebrate it this weekend or will you tonight?

Weekend Update

Lets do this in bullets:

  • Friday spent had a wile evening running 2.5 miles while the husband played video was that exciting. :)
  • Saturday woke up early to head to Spin Class, I got there at 7:15 and got one of the last bikes for the 7:30 class.
  • Later I got cleaned up and went to donate blood, I was able to as my iron levels were high enough this time.
  • Sunday the plan was to run 11 miles, the turned into a 2 mile run and a 9 mile walk. I am completely bummed about this. My left hip has been bothering me for about a week. I went to the chiropractor on Friday and it felt great on Saturday.  I woke up this morning with a little pain but I hoped it would loosen up. 2 miles in I wanted to call it quits. I noticed that if I walked the pain was a lot less. So I pushed through and did the 11 miles out side even if I had to walk to the finish. Back to the chiropractor tomorrow and figure out a new plan of attack.
How was your weekend?

Friday's make me sooooo happy

Bacon makes me happy, but Fridays also make so happy. Wednesday I took a rest day today I was motivated to get my tempo run in. When it came to actually running my body wasn't really in it. I got 4 out of 6 miles . Oh well there is always another day. On my schedule for the weekend, a 2 miler today and 11 miles on Sunday. I have the route planned out for my 11 mile run and I am nervous but excited about it. All I can hope for is no rain.

In other news (Just) Trying is for Little Girls nominated me for this blog land award.

The rules of this nomination are:Tell my readers seven random things about myself as well as pass on the award to seven other great bloggers.
Nominees, in order to accept this award you must:

2. Write seven random things about yourself.
3. Award seven other awesome and inspiring bloggers.

My Random Facts:
1. I have been on a TV special for the BBC about the car accident I was in 1996.
2. My husband tells me I have webbed feet. I have to disagree.

I like to say we named her after me, since she has my middle name - but only 'classier', we are Jennifer and Genevieve, even if she does go by the nickname Evie.

7. My brother and I were asked if were identical twins most of my childhood. Not in a good way - they usually thought we were boy/boy twins. Someone thought it was a good idea to give me a pixie hair cut when I was 5.

Bacon makes me happy

Were you one of the 2500+ plus people who ordered compression socks from the deal on Schwaggle yesterday? I was, in fact I ordered 2 pairs. Both in black, yes I know I am plain like that, but when you have bigger calf's the design gets all stretched out. I really wanted the Argyle, but I figure it would look crazy like the heart on my RunLove compression socks. Either way 2 pairs for the price of one is my kind of deal.

Last night I did my easy 3 miler while watching the biggest loser. I actually picked up the pace a little and tried 15 second intervals at 7mph, heck if the 300+ lb guy on BL could do it for 15 seconds, I could also, right? I know he went up to 9.5mph, but I was not ready to test that out, maybe next time.  With fall setting in I need to start wearing longer sleeve shirts instead of tank tops when I run, today I tried to wear my short sleeve shirt from the IronGirl race and that lasted about a mile before I took it off. I just hate things on my arms, I need to get over this as its getting cold out and I know it is going to be cold during my half.  This one kept riding up so its out. This morning was supposed to be spin class, I was dressed and ready to but instead went back to bed. Rest day for me.

Random find - I found this gem when pinning away on Pinterest and I thought it was super funny! Whatever truth might actually be there  - doesn't really matter to me. Bacon has always good for my healthy as it makes me happy!  And if something makes you happy its supposed to be good right. Of course there is a fine line, Vodka could make me happy but large amounts, not so good for my health.

What's your take do you enjoy a nice side of bacon with your breakfast if you have the chance?

Any suggestions on long sleeve tops?

Did you order any compression socks yesterday?

Monday, Monday

I can't be the only one in the world who wishes running skirts and bike skirts had a draw string. I have to have workout clothing with draw strings to get them to just fit right.  This morning it took me half the class to get the skirt situated just right so it wouldn't give me a plumbers crack when I was riding. Once I had the golden placement figured out the rest of the class was great.  Here is a photo of me in the skirt this morning, it is about 5AM and I have been up for maybe 10 minutes.

The plan for this week. Its official I am 5 weeks out to my next half. That means peeps we are 5 weeks until Thanksgiving. Bring on the turkey! I am never asked to bring anything to Thanksgiving, I wonder if it is because my in laws realize that I am a terrible cook. :) Either way last night I tried Brussel Sprouts for the first time in - well I think ever. I might have had them as a kid, but I really don't remember.  I was surprised that I actually thought they were not bad. I think that if they had been cooked with bacon they would have been perfect. As you know everything is better with bacon. The point of this is maybe this year I will bring them as a dish. I wonder if anyone else actually likes them, I guess I have 5 weeks to find out.  Now for the plan:
Monday - Spin Done
Tuesday - Easy run 3 miles @13:57
Wednesday - Spin
Thursday  - Tempo Run 6 miles w/4 @ 12:26
Friday - 2 miles @ 13:57 (I may take this as a rest day)
Saturday - Spin
Sunday - 11 miles @ 13:57

Cutting back on sugar this past week has been tough. But for the first time in forever this morning the scale was down! It is never down come Monday morning so I think I am doing something right. I don't want to share to much on what I am doing right now. Whenever I write to much about my weight loss, I seem to jinx myself. So for now the changes I am making are working.

What is on your schedule for the week?

The Sunday 10

This run was destined to fail. First I didn't up and run first thing this morning. Instead I went out to breakfast.  Final around 12:30 I decided it was time to hit the trail. I grabbed my stuff and headed out the door.  The second fail of the day was my camera battery was dead. Because of this you will get the pleasure of now only seeing head shots for the rest of the post! :)

Enjoying my first ever Gu! Well that sounds bad. How about enjoying my Free Gu from PowerBar - did I happen to mention that is double caffeine latte flavor. For a coffee junkie this is perfect.

Head shot number 2 - look at me all smug not realizing that my Garmin is going to fail me in about 1 mile. I plugged it in last night but didn't check to see if the charger was actually plugged in also.  It was frustrating that it wasn't working, but I figured I would need to run at least 2 hours to hit 10 miles, maybe a little longer so I checked my phone and kept track of the time. I ended up running for 2 hours and 15 minutes.
Last head shot of the day, this was at my last out and back location. I had about 45 minutes left to run and I was surprised at how well my ankle was holding up. This was my first outside run since October 2nd and I was nervous that it was going to fail me.  The photo below is my view at the turn around point. Oh how I love this lake and this trail is becoming on of my favorites. Not only because it is completely flat, but because it also has beautiful views.

On my way back to my car I ran into Lori, a lady I met during my last 10K - she was just starting her run. As I finished my last mile she was starting her first. I made it back to my car and was feeling great. The downside is I need to get gas in my car to make it home and go to the bathroom more then anything. I really didn't want to use the gas station bathroom post 10 mile run, yea not pretty and that need to be taken care of in the comfort of my own home. I put enough gas in my car to get home and headed out.  Post run I am feeling a little sore but nothing compared to my first 10 miler so that is a bonus.  I still struggle with the first 3 miles, but after that I get in a grove and actually start enjoying my run.

 How was your weekend?

Thank goodness I had a pedicure

This morning I headed to spin class. I didn't wear my new skirt as it was pouring down rain and it was cold outside. Either way I think this instructor was trying to kill us. Today she had us do here version of a ladder ride, but recovery was pushed at a lower speed but still road resistance. My legs are feeling it tonight.

On to the title of this post. They opened a RoadRunner Sports in our area. I talked my husband into stopping by it today. While I was there I was fitted for insoles. I was so thankful for the pedicure as my feet were groped by the insole shaping person. I cannot wait to give them a try tomorrow.

While we were there we entered in a drawing for some free giveaways. The had lots of great items they were giving away and I was lucky enough to win $50 worth of PowerBar products. Looks like I have enough fuel to get me through this training cycle.

How is your weekend going?

The Friday Five

Five things Friday:

1. I was going to follow up with last weeks Flame Free Confession, but decided to leave it for next week. Although I do appreciate all of the confessions you shared - they helped me feel normal.
2. After last weeks egg's and Oreo incident I have been trying to kick sugar to the curb. It is so hard - I swear when it comes to sugar I am so mindless and just eat. The worst is homemade or fresh chocolate chip cookies I could eat a dozen and not even realize it. The past few days have been really hard but it is getting easier. I only had one day where I actually felt like I was going through withdrawals.....that sucked.

3. This week a received a cycling skirt from a wonderful blogger (thanks Kim). I was so happy when it arrived, I ripped open the package and instantly the jokes started flowing from my husbands mouth. Now I know any cyclist will not think that the padding looks funny. But I am not a 'true' cyclist, I go to spin class and get my ride on. I think it doesn't help that the lining is bright pink and because of that it tends to look more like male anatomy. Many jokes followed.  I will have to get a photo with the skirt on and I may give the skirt a male name. That way I can say inappropriate things like 'Gus gave me a good ride today'. Either way I will report back.

4.  We carved one of our pumpkins last night.  Who am I kidding I took photo's and my husband did the carving. I don't have the skills to carve a pumpkin without it looking like it was done by a 4 year old. My daughter loves pumpkins but is usually terrified of the pumpkin guts. This year she wasn't afraid of them but she refused to touch them. Baby steps I guess. I can't talk about Evie with out posting a photo of her.

5. My run last night was painful. 4 miles 2 at 11:40, those two miles were tough. Of course the first 3 miles of anything are tough and then I feel like my legs loosen up and I start to get in the grove.  Next up 3 miles at an easy pace, just what I need for a Friday run.

6.  Ok so I have six items, but this song popped in my head today and reminded me of high school. A song I am going to have to add to my next play list.  For those who are wondering this song came out in 1993 and I graduated in 1996.

I hope everyone has a great weekend. Don't forget to blog hop and I hope all of your runs this weekend are enjoyable.

Don't be that guy

I am cracking up this morning as Julie shared the below video with me on Facebook.

I am sure I am some random combo of all of these people! Reminds me of the picture that was floating around last week.   I will try my best tonight to not look like the above video when running tonight. The plan is 4 Mi w/ 2 @ 11:40 w/ 800 jogs. Those 2 miles are going to be tough but I am going to push through and get them done.

In other news, I think I need to work a mid week rest day in to my plan. By Thursday I am just exhausted. I need to figure something out to help keep my energy levels up through out the week.  Any suggestions? I am terrible at taking vitamins, I try and probably take them about 50% of the time.

How do you keep going through out the week?

Cupcake Classic and more

Last night I participated in  Cupcake Classic  I did it on my treadmill. It was a really good run and made up for my crappy run on Sunday. I started out slow and increased the speed with each mile actually ending at a 5.5 mph which is just under an 11 mile pace.
Pre run  - Getting a little crazy

Do you see my bib number? I thought it was pretty great since we were running 3.7 miles in honor of Jess 37th birthday, who by the way does not look anywhere near 37.

And now for the MORE part. Last night at 8:45PM - I pulled the trigger and signed up for:

My husband reminded me that earlier this year before my first half that I said I never wanted to run a Rock'n'Roll. I am sure I said that because it was pricey at the time, which was the reason I picked the Kirkland Marathon the first time out it was only $35.  He say's I said  "I don't even like Rock'n'Roll, who would want to do that - it's stupid". Yet here I am with the bug to run it.

Share a race that you have already completed that you would love to do again? Or share one of your dream races?

Sleeeeep gooooood

Last night I was in bed by 8PM, I was just feeling off so I figured I might as well get to bed early. It was heavenly except when my alarm went off at 5AM to get up and run the  Cupcake Classic I hit snooze. I could feel a tension headache behind my eyes and while I was awake I figured a little more sleep never hurt.  I love sleep! When the alarm went off for he second time at 6AM my headache was gone and I was wide awake which is always a great feeling.

I am not worried about missing my morning run as I have already figured out when I will run tonight. Oh the beauty of a treadmill. I know many people hate them but for me it is a blessing to have one in my garage so that I can skip running in the dark or the rain. :) What can I say I am a baby when it comes to those things. I will run in the rain if its a race, but besides that I really don't like to.

We really need to carve our pumpkins so that I can cook and eat the pumpkin seeds. Pumpkin seeds are awesome and one of my favorite parts of October. I usually give them a bath in melted butter and sprinkle liberally with Johnny's seasoning and bake.

Anyone else running the Cupcake Classic  this week? How do you like your pumpkin seed cooked?

7 out of 10

Last night I was going to run 10 on the treadmill. I wasn't worried about has I had done that distance before on the treadmill and I actually had a bunch of stuff on the DVR set to get me through. There was only one problem. A miss communication with my husband, see I thought I said:

You can start dinner and eat without me. I will be on the treadmill for at least 2 hours, so I will just eat when I am done.

He thought I said:

Start dinner in 20 minutes and get me when it's done.

I  was 4.5 miles into my run when he came to get me. I ended up getting off the treadmill and going up to eat. I was just going to eat light, rest for an hour and then finish the last 5.5 miles. The time came to jump back on the treadmill and my body was not having it. I kept telling myself just a little more stick to it. After 2.5 miles I was toast, my ankle fells well, but my hips were just tired.   I ended up going to bed early in hopes for a good night sleep. I couldn't fall asleep at first as I was freezing, my husband piled plankets on me and I passed out. I woke up sweating buckets and tossed all the blankets off me only to wake up a few hours later soaking wet. I think my body was fighting something off.  This morning I got up and went to spin class. It was rough and at times I just had to sit there an pedal while the rest of the class tackled this hills. I didn't have it in me to keep moving. I finished the class but it wasn't pretty.

My plan for this week:
Monday - Spin - Done
Tuesday - 3.7 for the Cupcake Classic
Wednesday - Spin
Thursday - 4 Mi w/ 2 @ 11:40 w/ 800 jogs
Friday - 4 Mi
Saturday - Rest
Sunday - 10 Mi @ 14:00 (will plan better for this 10 miler)

How was your weekend?  Did you get your workouts in or attend any races?

Playing catch up

Friday I got my 2 mile run in, well actually 2.5 and followed that by some arm work. Saturday I got up and headed to Spin Class, I was actually going to stay for two classes but the second class had a sub and the sub was the lady that does all of the quotes. So yea I skipped that class - one spin class was enough to make my legs feel like jello anyways.

A friend shared a low carb pancake recipe with me and I really wanted to try it out. So this morning I got up and picked up the ingredients. This recipe was simple and just a few ingredients just the way I like things.

1 (8 oz) block of cream cheese
5 eggs
1 T Splenda
1 t Vanilla Extract
Vegetable oil for frying (I used spray oil)

Equipment needed:
Egg Forms

This is really easy - microwave the cream cheese to soften it about 1 minute, add the Splenda and vanilla extra and mix. Then add each egg and mix one at a time.

Next  heat up your pan, spray or oil your egg forms and get to cooking. I used a quarter cup  measuring cup to portion out the batter. The batter will be thinner then normal pancakes.  I only have two forms, one is  a Christmas Tree and the other a Star. The Star worked better for these.

The original recipe says it makes 12 pancakes, I was able to make 10. If I had round forms I am sure I could make 12.  I served them up with a little sugar free syrup. They were delish but tasted more like eggy french toast then pancakes. Next time I think I will add more vanilla and Cinnamon.
I have some leftovers for tomorrow's breakfast and I think they will reheat nicely. I think they would be especially good with a little jam.

This morning we have family photo's scheduled so I postponed my 10 miler until later in the day. I didn't want too,  but I also wanted to be able to walk when get our family photo's taken and also not look like death from getting up so early to make it happen before we have to go.  I am determined and it will happen today.

Have you found a recipe in blog land that you tried and loved? If so please link it in the comments I am always looking for good recipes that are easy to follow.

Flame Free Friday Confession

I used to belong to a chat board and every Friday we had a Flame Free Friday Confession. Sometimes good stuff was shared and other times it would get a bit out of control. Either way it was always fun to see what people would share for the week.  Stuff from I pee in the shower to the ridiculous amount of food they ate that day. Either way here are my flame free confessions for the day.
  1. This morning I washed my 2 eggs down with 4 oreo's, not sure why but it just happened. You know those moments when wake up out of a fog and say why did I just eat that. Huh, I have no idea.
  2. I am been considering cutting my carb intake and since I started thinking about it all I seem to eat is carbs. Maybe that is a sign that it would be a good idea to eliminate some.
  3. I love Halloween, but I am just not into it this year. I think its because it falls on a Monday.  Halloween needs to always fall on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. It just makes it more enjoyable and easier to celebrate.
  4. I skipped my workout yesterday, it was a couple of miles and strength training. Instead I watched TV then made my way to bed at 9PM. Clearly I needed the sleep.
  5. I don't want to run my 10 miler this weekend. I think I am scared of it, or scared of hurting myself again. I think I will take it two miles at a time and evaluate as I go......I am not going to lie but I am kind of looking for an excuse to not do it.
What would you like to confess on this flame free Friday?

You make the choice

I  have always been a believer that people need to make their own decisions in regards to their food choices. The longer I struggle with my weight the more I see it is a cruel cruel world out there.  I know that it is my responsibility to lose the weight. I put it on, I can and will take it off, but the outside world is not going to make it easy. For example - I saw a commercial the other day for a sandwich that, well looked like a delicious heart attack on a plate. This is something that I probably would have eaten in the past. Something that I would have cleared the plate and left feeling like I was going to barf, but I wouldn't have stopped me.
It looked so good that I had to look it up and see that was actually on it. Introducing the ultimate in patty melts. A hand-pressed beef patty topped with our NEW creamy Mac ‘n Cheese, melted Cheddar cheese and zesty Frisco sauce on grilled potato bread. Served with a side of our wavy-cut French fries

Oh Denny's this is wrong is so many ways! Check out the nutritional stats on this: It has more calories then I allow myself in one day.   Serving Size - 21 oz |  Calories - 1690 | Fat - 99 | Trans Fat - 1 | Saturated Fat - 36 | Cholesterol - 180 | Sodium - 2010 | Carbohydrates - 126 | Fiber - 7 | Protein - 64 | Sugar - 11
Of course you have to remember this doesn't include any dipping sauce as you know Ranch would be awesome with this.   I wish there were more restaurants that were compelled to help the nation fight against obesity, but that is not going to happen so the fight has to start with me. I can only control the foods that go into my mouth and do my best not to enable my family to go down the wrong path food wise.

The plan for me is today is to keep fighting the good fight against obesity. I stayed up to late last night playing catch up on my DVR so no early workout for me. Since I did my 5 miler Tuesday, today my plan is 2 miles followed by Jillian Michael's Shred It with Weights DVD.

What is the worst meal out there? There are so many so lets say what are the worst, that you would actually consider ordering? What is your favorite meal to order when eating out?

Wednesday, October 12, 2011

Last night I had a 5 mile tempo run on the training plan. Warm up and then 3 miles at 12:25 and cool down. It was a late workout as I didn't start until a little after 8PM, but it allowed me to watch How I Met Your Mother, while Biggest Loser queued up on the DVR. The plan was to do the best I could as I know the my ankle was still a little sore but just keep pushing.  It was a tough run and I had to work for it. I switched over to Biggest Loser sometime after mile two. I tend to skip through a bunch of the whining the contests due, but one part really hit home for me. I had taken a break to stretch shortly after mile 3 when Dolvett was talking to one of the contestants and said "When you begin to love your actions, you begin to love yourself". It was one of those moments where you look at yourself and think. It hit me that while I could give up at 3 miles, I could also push through and finish the last 2 that my plan called for. I wasn't hurting and 3 miles is great, why not finish what I started. I have always had a hard time with being proud of what I accomplish, I brush it off like anyone can do it - its not a big deal. I need to remember to love my actions.  In the end I finished my 5 miles and I know, if it hurts to touch it - don't touch it.

This morning I got up at 4:45 to head to Spin class, always a difficult transition late night run to early morning Spin.  As I was getting ready I picked up my training plan and realized the 5 miles I ran yesterday was only supposed to be 2, and the 2 I ran Monday was supposed to be Tuesday. Whoops! That is what happens when I don't write out  my entire week in advance. Oh well, the 5 miler was actually scheduled for Thursday.  Now I just have to figure out what to put in its place.

I think my Spin instructor tired to kill us this morning he had has doing a hill race to this song! It was a bit intense for early in the morning.

What are you listening to? Any song a "must" when  you workout?

I missed you too

Oh Dailymile how nice of you to let me know my friends miss me.  If you want to be my friend on dailymile feel - click here.  A little disclaimer, I am pretty lame on the DM as I just track my workouts and then write about it here. :) Either way the choice is yours.

This week starts 7 weeks until my half. I am starting to freak out as I do not feel ready. Yes, I know I have 7 weeks to get there I am just hoping my ankle can hold up.  After taking a week of from Cardio last night I jumped on the treadmill for 2 miles.  I know not much in the grand scheme of thing, but it was more then last week so I am happy.  What's up next 5 miles and then Spin Class on Wednesday - I am more excited for Spin then I am the 5 miles.

How do you track your mileage?

The Cabin

The past couple days I have spent in the wilderness. Not roughing it per se, but when you have to drive down a 5 mile dirt road to the amazing cabin you will be staying in, its roughing it in my book. My aunt and uncle invited us to their cabins in the Klamath National Forest in California. It was a 10 hour drive from our house, but cheaper then flying and renting a car. We arrived Friday morning after making a pit stop to sleep in Oregon. There were some people that slept in tents, some in motor homes and 11 of us the crammed into this small cabin, it was cozy.  I am not complaining though as I shared a bed with my daughter, while others slept on the floor in front of the wood stove.

Adorable sign on our cabin, 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom, wood stove heat and a loft.

The little cabin

Shirts that were made for the event
On thing for sure with so many people there was no shortage of food. My aunt even had a candy bar that was on the deck ready for snacking all weekend long! On top of that for the big dinner the roasted a pig and a deer. We called it a dig...since  they marinated the deer meat and wrapped in in bacon and then placed it in the pig to cook over night.  The food was delicious and the desserts were even better. But best of all was the friends and family we spent our time with.
candy - yum

I asked my dad to take  a photo and he got all artys

On Saturday we took a drive up to the Fire look out tower, however the gate was closed and we had to walk about 45 minutes up hill to the tower, we timed the walk back down and it took as 30 the walk up could have taken longer since we had 2 - 4 year olds, a 6 year old and a 12 year old with us. They were troopers though and made it all the way up with a little motivation. I had a hard time breathing, but pushed through. I could defiently tell the elevation difference.

View from the top, worth the walk
Overall we had a great weekend. I am ready to test out my ankle today with a short 2 mile run that is on my plan. Crossing my fingers that it will hold up. I was on my feet a lot this weekend, but I really tried to take it easy overall.

You asked, I anwsered

I loved all of the questions in my Giveaway post. I tried my best to answer them. Feel free to ask more at anytime. I am pretty much an open book. This post will get long, I am warning you.

Jessica  asked - What made you want to run? When did you start running?
I have always hated running. I don’t enjoy it much, I do enjoy crossing the finish line and after my daughter was born in 2007 I decided to give it a try as something I could do with my husband. He is a natural runner, it is easy for him. I am not and is still something that is hard for me mentally and physically.   One of the big things for me is being able to keep up with my daughter as she gets older. I don’t want to be the parent sitting on the sideline, I want to be the parent running along side my child.  I have lost about 75lbs since she was born, but still have at minimum 35lbs more to go. Running makes me sweat and if I can control the hunger it also creates post run I can reach my goals and help to set a good example for my daughter at the same time.

KJ  asked - Do you have a ritual you follow before a run/race? Same meal? A Certain drink? Coffee followed by straight sugar?
My ritual is typically a half PB&J and some water. If I am feeling dehydrated I will put a Nuun tablet in it.  Some days I will also have a banana on the drive to the race; it just depends on how my stomach is feeling. I typically pee at least 4-5x from the time I get up until the race start. I even made a pit stop once in a bush in the middle of a 10K as I just had to go.  I am a huge coffee drinker but rarely drink it before a race again it depends on how my stomach feels the morning of and how much time I have before the race.

Kerry asked - What do you do for your day job? I love finding other working mom's.
Well since I signed a social media contract I can’t really go into details. I do work a 40 hour work week job with the occasional work from home days. Most days I am in the office which thankfully is not far from home.  On a perfect day I get up around 4:30-5AM and get my workout in before I wake up my husband and daughter and we all head out the door at the time. I drop my daughter off at Pre-K and head to work. On days I sleep in I am up at 6AM and still out the door by 7AM. Thankfully we are typically all home by 5PM so we have a nice evening together and I work out after the little one is put to bed.

Suz and Allan asked - What are your running goals for 2012?
I am still trying to figure this out. I have started to fill out my Race Calendar and I am thinking that I might shoot for four half marathons in 2012.  I would like to continue to do at least one race a month it keeps me on my toes and helps me stay motivated for the longer races.  Smaller but still important goals – Run at 10K in 1:15 and a 5K in 35min.

Crystal asked - Do you ever want to do a full marathon?
Nope, nada, uh uh, never…yup I said never.  I just don’t have the desire to run that far. I would rather work on improving my speed on the shorter distances.  After I ran my half in May - I said "this is far enough, I see no need to run more then 13.1 miles."

Me running away from a full marathon

Amy asked - What has been your biggest running accomplishment since you started running? Is it a race? A great day you had in training? The feeling of pushing farther than you thought possible? What is it you're most proud of accomplishing on your running journey?
I still have a hard time feeling accomplished with my running. I would have to say that my biggest accomplishment is that I am still doing it. I haven’t given up. I have started running in the past and then after a few months given up on it. I have run a race each month since February to me that is accomplishment. Sticking to it and improving.  While finishing my first half was pretty awesome just starting towards that goal was a big deal for me.

These were great feelings though

Finishing the last .1 with my daughter on Mother's Day

Haley asked - Will you get Evie started in running? Does she already have an interest in it watching you?
I will let Evie carve her own path. If she chooses running great, if she wants to be a ballerina or a soccer player we will follow see where it takes us. I feel strongly that you should only give your child a nudge in a direction but let them choose what they want to fall in love with. Right now she loves to run. She begs to run a race with me and she already has her own running skirt.  As for an interest in watching me running, ehh not so much, I mean she wants to come to cheer me on but she is only 4 so she gets impatient easily waiting for me to run by.

She does look like a natural runner though!

TripleT also known as Three Things Thursday.
  1. Random and useless fact: We have a restaurant in our town called TripleXXX Rootbeer Drive-In, its one that everyone just calls TripleXXX. A name that you do I Internet search that at work and don't have the wrong stuff come up. Last weekend they were having a special during our towns street fair. Pay $10 for parking and get a Free root beer float, we didn't take them up on the offer as we road the $2 shuttle instead. But it reminded me of smoothing I would have done in the past. Parked closer to the event and consumed a root beer along with massive amounts of festival food.
  2. What I didn't tell you about my 10K (1:19:17) on Sunday is that while I didn't PR (1:18:23), I did beat my previous 10K time of 1:24 at the Iron Girl 10K just 3 weeks before. I really think that it had to do with setting a realistic goal. I knew that I wasn't going to be able to hold my goal pace I wanted of 12:30, but I could be under 13:00. I am really proud that I set that goal before the race and just focused on making it through. Talking to someone and having someone to check in with me was great, even if it was just a random person I met on the course.  She was so nice and I realize I need to open up to when running more.
  3. Photo's from Sunday's 10K - yes that train wreck of a mess is me! I got the new skirt but I didn't have a chance to run it pre-10K, so I just tossed it over some capri's. I also had a long sleeve shirt tied around my waist because I was being a wimp at the beginning and I was cold. I should know better because after a mile I took it off.  I would have tossed it but I didn't want to litter it being a smaller race and all.  Clearly this outfit wasn't working for me, but you know what I was comfortable  and nothing really bothered me along the race so that is a bonus.

Have you had any race outfit mishaps? When you look back and go what was I thinking?

A no cardio week

Monday I wrote a plan that I figured would work for the week even with my travel at the end of the week. As of today that is all cancelled. I am putting myself on forced rest. I tried to run last night and with each step the pain just increased instead of loosening up. I lasted about a quarter of a mile before the pain was to much to handle and I called it quits. After chatting with my husband we decided that it would be best if I laid off all cardio for the rest of the week. Needless to say I am not happy about this, but I know this needs to happen so that my ankle can heal. Last night I headed back to my garage and did 45 minutes of strength training, I might not be able to run but I can lift weights and work on my legs. Tonight I think I will bust out P90x Legs and Back workout, as well as, Ab Ripper X - have to make the most of these next few days without any cardio.

Sometimes I need this reminder
Even when things are not going my way I can still be awesome.

What are you going to be awesome at today?

Giveaway Winners

Let's start with the winners of the Active Bands.  I used pick the two winners because I couldn't think of a creative way to select them this time around.  The winner's are:

Comment #38 - Suz and Allan

Contact me at runnermaybe @ with your name and email address and I will get your information to Active Band. A big shout out to Active Band for assisting in this giveaway. Of course it is truly a shout out to my readers! Thank you I love your advice and encouragement.

You guys asked me some good question's and I am working on them. I hope to have them posted on Friday. I had a lot of time to work on them last night as I sat there icing my ankle and missing out on my workout. For some reason last night it started to swell up again so I figured I should skip my workout and ice it since I really want to do a Biggest Loser Treadmill tonight I figure an extra day of rest wouldn't hurt it.

Since no one laughed at my Corney joke for National Trucker's day - tell me your best cheesy joke.

This week

My ankle has been healing well even with all of the extra stress I have been placing on it. I have been sleeping with my Tommie Cooper ankle sleeves and I think they are helping a lot.  I am doing my best to ice post run. This morning it was a little stiff, but I did some ankle stretches and rolls before getting out of bed. I had planned to get up and go to Spin class, but I set my alarm wrong and didn't wake up until the class was half over. I am hoping I can make it to a class tonight, but I am not sure.

The Plan for this week looks like this:
Monday - Spin Class (maybe) + 2 Miles
Tuesday - 8 Miles (light version of BL workout since I want to cover larger distance this time)
Wednesday - Spin Class
Thursday - 4 Miles
Friday - Sunday - Attending a Family Reunion my Aunt and Uncle have many many acres in a National Forrest so I beleive there well be plenty of outdoor excersise taking place at their ranch.

Last day to enter my giveaway Active Band Giveaway - Here ends 10/4. I hope everyone has a great week!

Salmon Days 10K

This morning I has scheduled to run the Salmon Days 10K, but yesterday I rolled my ankle again. Last night I debated not running the run. My husband said maybe I should just run on the treadmill then I could stop if I needed to. I considered it, even when my alarm went off this morning I considered it. I got dressed and got ready to leave and then I sat down and thought what am I doing, I should rest my ankle. The cheapskate in me screamed - but you already payed. Maybe I can just down grade to the 5K.

After picking up my packet and taking my items back to my car I decided that I was just going to run the 10K at a slow and steady pace. Keeping my miles right under 13:00 minute miles. I figured if I keep it nice and even then it would be less pain on my ankle.  This is how the miles read out on my garmin.

Mile1 - 11:50
Mile2- 12:39
Mile3- 12:54
Mile4- 13:14
Mile5 - 12:33
Mile6 - 12:53
and .2 - 3:24

Mile 4 had a slight incline and that definitely slowed us down but I was able to push through. I say us as about mile one I met a women named Lori and we ran the rest of the race together. She is training for her first half in December and this was her first 10K. It was nice to have a running partner who was my speed, but who at the same time running was a struggle, but worth the fight.  My official time was 1:19:17 just one minute shy of a PR, but there will be more races and more chances to get a PR. Two days of walking at the festival and running a 10K today has really left me feeling exhausted.

How was your weekend?

Hello October

There was only one item on my list for September goals that did not get done.  That was ‘Run my hill - I am running out of time as the first day of fall is 9/23.’ Ehhh….it’s a hill, its right outside my house I have plenty of time to tackle it.

Here are some of the times that I am proud of for September:
The numbers:
  • Miles Ran – 48
  • Miles Rode (Spin Class) – 195 – WOW! I went to Spin Class 10 times in September!
  • Pounds lost – 3.1 – not the best but I will take it.

October Goals
  • Keep up with all of my runs for half marathon training
  • Run a 10K – well that is easy its tomorrow
  • Spin class 2x a week – minimum 8 classes
  • Lose more than 3lbs, I am thinking 5
What does October look like for you? Do you have any fun races planned? I found this one that was Zombies and Humans 5K. The Human's start 2 minutes before the Zombies with a tail on them. Then the Zombies are released and collect as many tails as they can! Seriously sounds like fun, but I would have to be a human and well I am sure I would be a zombie seconds after the zombies were released since I am a slow runner.

Only 4 more days left to enter my giveaway Active Band Giveaway - Here ends 10/4.
